Echoes of May is a Jazz Duo (piano & vocals) comprised of Jonathan & Baraka May. The brother and sister have performed professionally since 2006, creating their own renditions of Jazz standards & Top 40 hits at The New York Grille, The Citrus City Grille, & many private events. The duo specializes in Jazz standards - Bossa, Swing, Samba, & Blues - and they also feature many contemporary favorites from artists like Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Nora Jones, The Beatles, Coldplay, Michael Buble, & many others. Echoes of May is available to provide live musical entertainment for private events, weddings, jazz clubs, & more. The duo also performs with bass & drums upon request.
Jonathan and Baraka come from a large, musical family and are part of the third generation of a long line of professional musicians, including film composer/Jazz pianist, Daniel May, LA Jazz bassist, Ben May, Florida Orchestra conductor, Jonathan May, and Classical composer, the late Walter May. They are son and daughter to the late David May, a well-known and beloved LA Jazz bassist. Cultivating their natural talents with training, practice, and seasoned experience, the duo has achieved a richness of sound full of nuance, dynamic diversity, and an understanding of the other as each song flows.
Jonathan and Baraka have been on the stage entertaining audiences across the country, performing at the Lincoln Center in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the Johnny Mercer songwriter's convention in Chicago, and many other notable venues.
Jonathan is a gifted pianist and artist with an impeccable ability to play both as a virtuosic soloist and sensitive accompanist; he can be seen regularly as a featured soloist playing ragtime piano at Disneyland's "Carnation Cafe". He is Classically trained and has worked with some of the finest musicians, composers, and instructors in his training, which has extended his expertise into playing Jazz, Ragtime, and Musical Theater. While pursuing his BM in Composition, he has written over 75 songs that have been featured in performances across the globe. Most recently, his Broadway renditions of "Peter Pan" have hit the stage in Australia after receiving enthusiastic reviews throughout the U.S.
Baraka is an exceptional singer with a gift for vocal versatility; her voice exhibits both a powerful command and a sultry sweetness. She has sung with notable composers, including Danny Elfman, Michael Giacchino, Alan Silvestri, and Jason Robert Brown and has sung for numerous film, tv, and commercial recordings, including Cirque Du Soliel's show, "IRIS", DreamWorks film, "Real Steel", Disney film, "John Carter", JC Penny, Old Navy, Microsoft, Covergirl, KEARTH 101.1 Radio, Oprah, and CBS Channel 2 News. She is the recorded singing voice of the Princess in the Medieval Times dinner theater show across the country. Baraka has both a Master's Degree and Bachelor's Degree in Voice from the prestigious Thornton School of Music at USC and is a professor of Voice at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy.
