Tom has built a career that blends timeless traditions with bold creativity. From intimate house parties to grand stages, his versatile talent and adventurous repertoire make him one of the most in-demand accordionists in the U.S. and Canada. Read on to learn about his musical journey and tips for success.
Becoming an accordionist
Tom Persinos‘s musical passions span an impressive range, including ragtime, jazz piano, café-style accordion from the early 1900s, and 20th-century modern music. With such eclectic tastes, Tom has carved out a niche that blends timeless traditions with bold creativity.
Musical roots
Tom’s love for music began early, shaped by his family’s influence. “My parents took us kids to concerts, foreign films, and exposed us to all kinds of art,” he recalled. That broad exposure left an impression and inspired him to explore music on his own terms. He began playing the piano, performing a wide range of classical and popular tunes, before being drawn to the accordion, a choice sparked by film culture and his own curiosity. “I watched Lawrence Welk at first, then in high school I bought an accordion and taught myself.”
After picking up the accordion, he dove into building a repertoire that reflected his wide-ranging interests. “Being a fan of international music, I learned 20th-century European and American classics and music from films.” As he developed as an accordionist, he moved beyond the more natural choices. In Tom’s words, his repertoire stretches “from Bach to punk,” proving there’s hardly a genre he won’t explore.
Creative journey
Tom always pictured himself onstage, making a living as a professional musician and entertainer. His early gigs included piano and accordion performances for vaudeville, burlesque, and cabaret shows, where he discovered the accordion’s unique appeal. “I realized that I could create a niche with the accordion,” he said.
When asked what keeps him motivated, his answer was simple but heartfelt: “The adrenaline of the creative process.” Today, Tom continues to expand his musical reach, both through live performance and original compositions. “I am arranging some music from the English Music Hall era, the precursor to vaudeville, burlesque, and cabaret,” he said. Tom’s work has also made its way to the screen: “I have three of my films and compositions on ROKU, Station Six, featuring independent filmmakers and musicians (Summer Chant, The Secret Garden, and Path to the Gods) on a compilation video.”

TP: I played the Boston Lyric Opera’s 2014 Opening Night Gala at the Wang Theater. It was a fairy tale come true! I played the accordion and toy piano outside the Wang as opera patrons arrived. I also played at the cocktail party and dinner inside the Wang. We accompanied patrons across the street to the Schubert Theater, where La Traviata was being performed.
