Dancing the Night Away

How doo-wop music inspired nuns

By GigSalad

“The Sisters were up dancing which is quite a challenge since the average age is 86. They were singing along to all of the songs because it was all the music they knew and danced to when they were younger.”

When GigSalad event hosts book a performer from our site, they’re able to give the performer their feedback by leaving a review on their PromoKit. This is a great way for other event hosts and planners to hear from the performer’s happy past clients! Sometimes we stumble upon a particularly moving review that makes us proud to connect hosts with extraordinary entertainers. In Kim’s case, it was the professional show band, Doo-Wop DeVille, who unexpectedly inspired the guests to dance the night away!

Kim works for an organization called New England Food Foundation, which was established for the express purpose of helping children in need through charitable activities. As a benevolent gesture, the archdioceses of Boston allowed the Foundation to use their retirement facility, Mount Saint Vincent, to hold their meetings. This is what Kim shared about her experience.

“Mount Saint Vincent’s has over 100 retired nuns from the Boston area, and we would take them to dinner and a show to thank them. Over the years, the sisters were getting too frail to travel, so we decided to bring the dinner and the entertainment to them. We have been doing that for five years now and have utilized your website to find the entertainment.

I must say that all of the groups, when they hear why we are holding the event, are very eager to help and enjoy the event just as much as the sisters do. When I contacted Doo-Wop DeVille and spoke with John Burke, he was really excited. He told his team about it, and they wanted to do something extra special, so they wrote a song for them!

The Sisters were up dancing, which is quite a challenge since the average age is 86. They were singing along to all of the songs because it was all the music they knew and danced to when they were younger. Most of the sisters stayed until the end of the event! Usually they leave early because they go to bed very early. But some even waited to talk to the band and thank them when they were done.

…[what] makes it even more special is that a few members of the group donated their proceeds to the New England Food Foundation after they attended the event because they were so impressed with the work that our organization does. All in all, everyone who was involved felt a little better when they went to bed that evening, because they knew that they made someone else feel special—and that is priceless!”
