Best Entertainment for Audience Participation

From our friends at Event Tickets Center

By GigSalad

Whatever kind of event you’re hosting, getting your audience involved in the entertainment can take the experience to another level. Audience participation adds an unexpected layer of fun and humor to everything from concerts to magic shows, and it’s a sure way to make your event more memorable. The key is finding the interactive act that’s a good fit for your audience. Here are three types of shows you may want to consider.

1. Hypnotists

Hypnotists and, equally, comedy hypnotists, are pros at getting the audience in on the action. Because most hypnotists require an audience member to be a part of their act, the chances of the audience connecting with both the hypnotist and their “special guest” is great. Before choosing a hypnotist—or any entertainer—be sure to discuss your event, any lines that shouldn’t be crossed, and the demographic of your audience. The more the performer knows about the audience, the better they can tailor the show to your needs and interests.

2. Magicians

Like hypnotists, magicians can be great for revving up the crowd thanks to their use of audience-involved tricks and illusions. You’ll generally choose between a strolling magician or a stage show. A strolling magician works best for more informal events—roaming around during cocktail hours or networking times. They’re great for one-on-one entertainment in casual settings, and they can be great for getting your audience laughing before they even sit down for the main event. If you need a magician or entertainer to loosen up the audience before you discuss last season’s financial results, a stage magician may be a better fit. Discuss the length of time you have to work with, since the entertainment can last 15 minutes or more than an hour. Look for someone who is energetic, funny and who will work well with your audience. Check out the performer’s profiles and any available videos of past performances to get an idea of what you can expect from them.

3. Bands

Bands can also be great to warm up the crowd for your event. However, you’ll want a band or musician that can engage the audience, act as an MC if necessary, and play songs that everyone knows and loves. Cover bands are good options since they may be able to play ’80s sing-a-longs from recognizable artists. It all goes back to knowing your audience and what you think they’d be most amenable to.

Now, the nitty gritty…

Here are a few tips to keep handy when it comes to booking entertainment.

  • Request an agreement outlining the who, what, when and where of your event just so you and your hired entertainer are clear on everything.
  • The agreement should state exactly what you’re providing (if you are supplying mics and the musician is supplying amps, for example) so as to avoid any confusion.
  • Be sure to mention meals, travel, additional charges and have several numbers listed so, if there’s an emergency, the entertainers can easily get in touch.
  • If you’re booking entertainment on GigSalad, your agreement (including all your event details) can be confirmed online and is easily accessible from a computer or mobile device.
  • If you’re dealing with an agent for bigger acts, all of the paperwork should be well organized.

Whether you choose to go the route of a self-deprecating magician, a hilarious hypnotist, a stand-up comic or a band, having interactive entertainment at your next event is a fantastic way to get your audience involved—and to ensure they’ll remember it for years to come.
