“With my own music, I decided to make what I thought people wanted to hear. But I can no longer cater to the masses.” - Zyah Belle
Hailing out of Vallejo, California, home to Bay Area music legends E-40 and the late Mac Dre, 22-year-old self-proclaimed hip-hop soul artist Zyah Belle is on a mission to rebuild what she sees as an oversaturated industry.
Being the daughter and niece of choir directors, there was rarely a moment where Zyah Belle wasn’t in the company of music. “I sang in my church’s children choir and adult choir,” says Zyah, who grew up being exposed to prominent greats such as Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind and Fire, Chaka Khan, Anita Baker and Kirk Franklin, in addition to a wide variety of others.
Despite having sang in her church’s choir, it wasn’t until she was cast as the lead role of Dorothy in The Wiz during her sophomore year of high school that Zyah discovered that she was, in fact, really talented at singing.
“Before then I would sing (link hidden)ie and Jill Scott softly in my room and wouldn’t let anyone hear me, because I didn’t think I could really sing.”
After the eruption of applause she was met with after singing the Charlie Smalls-penned “Home” on the opening night of the musical, it was in that very moment that Zyah realized she was meant to pursue a singing career.
When it comes to writing music, Zyah expresses that lyrics come to her during the most random moments of the day, even while she’s catching up on her Zs. “Sometimes I hear a beat and it just carries me to write. I can be in any environment to write. No matter where I am; if I am inspired, then that is my focus.”
In an industry where every artist is faced with the pressure of standing out and staying relevant, Zyah notes that the most challenging aspect of being an artist is the pressure of producing a quantity of music, as opposed to producing quality. “The industry is so oversaturated with up and coming artists that it can be easy to get caught up in the illusion of competing,” she says.
While many artists you see on your television screens today cater to whatever sound happens to presently be popular, Zyah has made it her business to create music for individuals that are able to find a connection with her on a personal level.
As with any dream worth achieving, she has had to make sacrifices that have helped place her in a better position to accomplish her goals. While some artists are after Grammy wins, Zyah’s biggest goal is simply to build a cult following of supporters who find themselves in such a deep connection with her music that it never dies.
Having already released her debut EP, Cigars and Amaretto, on Valentine’s Day, Zyah discloses that in the future she would most like to collaborate with Big K.R.I.T., Janelle Monae, Erykah Badu, Kendrick Lamar, Jill Scott and Andr 3000. Until then, she is speaking it into fruition and devoting her all to her craft.
“My music comes first; and I could focus all my energy and time on money, but this is my passion.”
