I am predominantly a classical trumpet player. The music I enjoy the most and am the most comfortable with comes from the Renaissance period through the Romantic period, 1400 to 1910 approximately.
Introduction and early musical life:
My name is Matthew O'Connor, I am a third-year Bachelor of Music student studying the trumpet at the University of Ottawa. I started performing music when I was 9, as a member of the Christ Church Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys then, under the direction of Matthew Larkin. I was a member of that choir for six years, and in that time, I had the opportunity to perform in many fantastic locations such as the National Arts Center in Ottawa, Canada; (link hidden)uls Cathedral in London, England; and Edinburgh Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland, to name a few.
Trumpet education:
I started playing the trumpet in middle school when I was 13 years old. Since then, I have developed a passion for the trumpet. In my final two years of High School, I was a member of the Ottawa Youth Orchestra under the direction of John Gomez and then Donnie Deacon. I also competed in the Kiwanis Music Festival, finishing in first place locally both times. I would go on to place first and third in the province. At the time I was studying under Travis Mandel, the principal trumpet of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra.
At the University of Ottawa, I have had the opportunity to be a part of the Orchestra, under the direction of Professor Jean-Philippe Tremblay, and the Wind Ensemble conducted by Professors Daniel Gress and then Douglas Sturdevant. During my time at the university, I have been studying under Professor Eric Rupp.
Professional Work:
I have been working as a freelance musician since my first year of university. I have performed at formal venues, most of which have been weddings or funerals. As well as teaching students, both as a mentor for the New Horizons Band as well as privately.

On a personal level, the two biggest influences on me and my music have been Matthew Larkin and Travis Mandel, they are the two people to who I owe my success.
