September 29th 2017 the members and guests of the Placer County Contractors Association were once again treated to the cool and energetic sounds of VoiceOver Band.
This is not the first event this skilled group has performed at for us, and it clearly won’t be the last.
With a simple call, the band is booked. No drama, no fuss, nothing but pure class and talent. We introduced this band to the membership at an event several years ago, and it was the first time we offered live sounds at a dinner event. From that point forward, it was expected. We tried to mix it up with a variety of different groups, but that just wasn’t sitting well with the ticket holders, VoiceOver Band was the talent, and were requested time and time again.
These guys are fun, and extremely professional. They set up before the event and play our guests through the check in times, take their breaks and mingle with the crowd, interact through the show in a way that doesn’t dominate the event but compliments the social networking experience. They also know their audience. The first time they played for us I was walking around the venue talking to members and I hear Gene’s voice talking about the Contractors Association, what we do, how we do it, and I was stunned. I didn’t brief him, they simply did their homework. Like I said, extremely professional, they know their audience and know how to engage them. They have friendly banter among themselves during the sets and are clearly friends outside the gig, you can’t fake the interaction, the closeness, and the gentle teasing and playfulness between the songs.
Our last event where we had the pleasure of their company was a beautiful clear night just last week. We had the lot full of tables, fire pit blazing surrounded by hay bales, wonderful food and tasty beers. With a packed event, my staff and I worked throughout the night to pull off a momentous event, and were rewarded with tables full of laughter and talk, all backed up by incredible sounds flowing across the venue.
I couldn’t have asked for a better event, it wouldn’t have been the same without Skip, Al and Gene.
I hesitate to write such a positive review, I still need to book these guys for January 12th 2018 and don’t want them so busy they don’t have time for us, but the truth is, I wish these guys nothing but continued success.
Much love to VoiceOver Band!

Voiceover is.... a versatile group that presents an excellent verity of fun danceable song favorites from the fifties, sixties, seventies to present hits. Great vocals, Patter and quick paced sets are a trademark of this seasoned band. Every member of Voiceover is a gentleman in the truest sense of the word; all have their own unique brand of wit; and all bring an intense passion for music and performing to every single gig. They're always happy to meet fans, so be sure and say hello at the next performance.
Skip Craun- Drums, Vocals
The band's 'skin specialist', Skip is the heartbeat of the Band. More than just pounding out a time signature is one of the finest vocalists on the scene, Skip interacts with his fellow musicians, working his runs and fills around their own, augmenting the snap and pop they deliver. Complex beat patterns never confuse the rhythm; he realizes that his service as a metronome for the rest of the band is critical to a snappy, professional performance, when to play; when not to play—Skip knows the value of a well-placed pause during a tune,
Gene Thorpe - Guitar. vocals
Gene Thorpe has been part of the Sacramento music scene for decades, both as a performer and an entrepreneur. While you don't often hear Gene play a lead during their shows, when he does, it is always polished to perfection, whether it's a sweet solo from the 50s, or a blistering blues riff. His sense of timing is steady, putting just the right choice of feel into the tunes.
Allen Purdy - Bass & Vocals
Some bass players are really just frustrated guitarists, and their style often conflicts with the other instruments in the band because they don't truly understand the power of the bass and its position in an ensemble. Not Allen. He started as a bass player many moons ago. His bass provides the foundation the band builds each performance upon., the bass is the root of the music, reinforcing the drums, and anchoring the other instruments. With a good bass player, a band sounds clean, crisp, solid, organized—arranged—which is exactly what Allen brings to the VoiceOver Band.
