What to Expect
I mainly communicate via email until the day of the event (where I'll communicate via phone call or text), and I like to have all of the details of the event set and ready to go one week before the event. Typically I will arrive 15-30 minutes prior to the start of the event to check in with the coordinator (if applicable) and get set up. If your event is open-scheduled, and is 2hrs+, I will take a 15 minute break halfway through and then resume playing. If there is a schedule of activities during your event (for weddings, speeches, etc) I request the coordinator to let me know in advance or to give me a signal during the event if it hasn't been previously discussed.
Violinist and Violist Shannon Elliott is an active freelance musician in the Greater New York City area. While her focus is on Classical Music, Ms. Elliott's professional career has a diverse list of accomplishments both in and out of the genre. Most recently, she was the violist for NYU's revival of the Broadway production Rags. Prior to this, she was the violist for the Off-Broadway production of Comfort Women at Playwrights Horizons, which was her introduction into the musical theater world.
In the classical realm, Ms. Elliott held the positions of section viola and Assistant Principal viola in the Garden State Philharmonic for two seasons, and has joined the Bergen Symphony, the Livingston Symphony Orchestra, and the International Chamber Orchestra of America on both violin and viola. During her time in these orchestras she has had the opportunity to perform on the elite stages of Carnegie Hall, the Strand Theater with the Atlantic City Ballet, and the Bohemian National Hall.
Ms. Elliott is an avid participant in contemporary music performances by local composers, and has premiered several new works. Her most recent projects have included premiering the work of the 2019 Manhattan Prize winner for string quartet composition, and collaborating with the Femmelody Chamber Music Collective (which advocates for music by women and minorities.) Additionally, Ms. Elliott has worked in some of NYC's premiere studios to record string tracks for groups ranging from local art collectives to pop music groups, such as U2.
A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, Ms. Elliott holds a Bachelor of Music in Viola Performance. During the course of her studies, she worked with several renowned conductors and ensembles such as Kurt Masur, Osmo Vanska, Perry So, the American String Quartet, and the Ying Quartet. She was also selected to perform in masterclasses for violists Garth Knox and Heidi Castleman. Ms. Elliott is currently pursing a Master of Music degree in String Studies at New York University under the tutelage of Karen Ritscher, and was recently a finalist in the 2019 NYU Concerto Competition.
In addition to performing, Ms. Elliott is an Adjunct Faculty member at NYU's Steinhardt School of Music, where she teaches violin and viola lessons to undergraduate students.
