I am a songwriter/violinist who combines looping violins and vocals to create a sound that is hard to define yet immediately accessible to a broad range of audiences. My music has been described as a "symphony of sound" due to the way I layer the violin live, lending me a "one man string quartet" feel that ultimately sounds like a mix of folk and classical music. I have performed everywhere from art galleries to music venues, festivals, weddings, and other special events.
For your event, I can create a very special ambiance through a mixture of instrumental and vocal-based songs that has won over all kinds of clients. Feel free to check my reviews!
Tobie played seamlessly, beautifully and beyond our expectations. Not only were our friends and family impressed, even our photographers wanted his contact information.
We got quotes from other musicians as well as companies that contract musicians, but were told they could not fulfill our requested songs because there was not published sheet music.
Not only did Tobie say that he could play our requests (published sheet music or not!), he seemed to enjoy the challenge.
We would be honored to use him again for any future events, and highly recommend him. Superb!
Response from Tobie Milford:
Thank you, Brett and Davi! Congratulations!
Tobie was reliable, very nice and a great violin player.
Response from Tobie Milford:
Thank you Julie!
Tobie was able to accommodate some song changes as we got closer. Sounded phenomal, great compliments for our wedding crowd. Dressed very classy and looked the part. Very talented and genuine. Would use again!
Tobie was a huge part of making our wedding everything I imagined and more. His music is beautiful and he is very talented, my wedding guest are still talking about him and how wonderful he sounded. He went above and beyond and even played a song he learned for us from one of our favorite artists. It was so perfect and I'm so happy I booked Tobie for our big day. Thanks again for everything!
A truly genuine person and superb artist! Would highly recommend Tobie to anyone, did a fantastic job, and made our big day even more special!
What to Expect
I am a life-long violinist (and, in the last decade, a songwriter, composer, and vocalist) who will play your requested songs with a high degree of professionalism and expressive nuance. As you'll see in my videos, I use "loop pedals" to create layers of violin tracks. I aim to make your event feel both personal and "grandiose" at the same time via a combination of your requested songs (if you have any) and a unique combination of cinematic original material and other classical, indie, and rock/pop covers.
If your event is a wedding, I will work closely with you to ensure song length and transitions are seamless. I also do my best to take requests on the spot.
If you hire me, you can expect a blending of approachability, professionalism, and open-mindedness. I am open to a variety of performance environments, have a very flexible repertoire, and am eager to learn whenever my clients have songs they would like me to perform at their events.
I am a classically-trained violinist raised in the Suzuki method, and I was fortunate enough to be instructed by a former teacher of Joshua Bell's, as well as several members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Since college, I have honed my songwriting/compositional abilities, and have since become an established songwriter/performer in Phoenix with some national attention as well.
Here is my "songwriter" bio:
The music of Tobie Milford has been described as an “ethereal symphony of sound”, using loop pedals to layer multiple violin parts and combine them his own vocals. This culminates in a nuanced and unique sound: ambient, minimalist string textures, quartet-style harmonies, sophisticated plucking patterns, and dynamic vocal melodies. His songwriting has led him to become one of Phoenix’s most widely-lauded solo acts, and his diverse fan base has invited him to play everywhere from bars and music venues to museums, art galleries, and a broad array of festivals, including Cincinatti’s Midpoint Music Festival in 2010. His music has been played on PBS programming, US Airways flights, and internet radio stations, reaching listeners from South Africa to New Zealand. That Milford has opened for cello looper extraordinaire Zoe Keating, ambient folk/postrock pioneers Sleep Whale, and singer-songwriters Tony Lucca and Joe Firstman is an indicator of his appeal to a diverse body of musical supporters.
His new material takes advantage of his newfound musical relationship with Phoenix’s fantastic Tetra Quartet, who are poised to expand his sound considerably, as they combine looping with string arrangements and percussion for a truly unique live experience.
Milford has contributed to the latest recordings of many Phoenix bands/songwriters including What Laura Says Thinks and Feels, Kinch, Peachcake, Ryan Taverna, the Constellation Branch, Andrew Jackson Jihad, Michelle Blades, Courtney Marie Andrews, Justin Olsen, Porches, and Cardiac Party. He was also commissioned by Snake Snake Snakes! to compose and perform string accompaniments for their live show when they opened for Jimmy Eat World at Phoenix’s Marquee Theater in October 2010.
Milford is also a member of Phoenix-based band the Whisperlights.
Additional Booking Notes
If your audience is small, I am able to provide my own amplification. However, larger events will require me to run through a PA system which I will need to have provided.
