Out of the old time tradition of dance music infused with spontaneity, wit and unexpected musical turns, The Ong's Hat Band was organized by a disparate group of acoustic musicians that quickly melded their various sensibilities into an audience-friendly and accomplished ensemble.
Steeped in American Traditional Music with side trips to Jazz, Classical, Rock and Pop, the members of the band put a new face on traditional music--Acoustic Roots Music On A Tangent.

The Ong's Hat Band draws from a wide variety of styles to present an audience friendly show with a high level of musicianship. We are an acoustic quartet- violin, mandolin, guitar and bass with clawhammer banjo. Songs are mostly covers with some originals. Mostly vocals with some instrumental music. We specialize in unusual 'trans-genre' arrangements, such as jazz arrangements of pop tunes, banjo centric arrangements of rock songs, etc. All band members are at ease improvising and we've all played or sung classical music.
Examples are The Beatles 'Things We Said Today' done as a modal jazz piece and 'Beethoven's 9th Nervous Breakdown, which features a Beethoven bass solo from the 9th Symphony, followed by a solo jazz arrangement of Ode to Joy followed by mandolin/fiddle breakdown of Ode to Joy and finished with 2 old-time fiddle tunes. We also do a mellow version of 'Louie, Louie' featuring clawhammer banjo.
We have played in many types of venues, but prefer a listening venue.
We have a full complement of PA equipment and are self contained regarding our needs.
