BUD NICHOLLS Bud Nicholls (Harold C. Nicholls, Jr.)Bud Nicholls began his musical journey as a child listening to his father's 78 rpm records. He loves all music but knew at an early age swing was his favorite. He has studied music throughout his life, playing several instruments, and holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of Montana.
Bud continued directing school bands, working in the retail music industry and playing in his fathers group The Harold Nicholls Big Band. Bud has been and continues to be a major leader and support to the music and arts community in Great Falls as the previous musical director for productions with Center Stage Inc and Summer Showcase.

Gig Length: 60 - 90 minutes
Director of the Great Falls Municipal Band where he has led for the past 28 years. Bud grew up watching his father work as a musician, conductor, composer, arranger and instructor and has continued the Nicholls family musical legacy. His knowledge of swing and commercial music recordings and musicians is overwhelming. But in the over 50 years hes been involved in the Great Falls music scene, his favorite gig was the 30 years he spent playing in his dad's band.
THE NEW HAROLD NICHOLLS BIG BAND. Harold Nicholls Sr. had an extraordinary understanding of music as a player, writer and teacher. But arranging may have been his greatest gift. Harold Nicholls band, The Four Horsemen, played at theopening of The Jockey Club on August 23, 1937. And from then on Montanans would be enjoying the fruits of his musical labors.Harold's creation of the latest songs were put down on paper, note by note with a skill and processthat gave wonderful results. Harold would hear a song, sketch out a condensed piano score and then transpose and transcribe 16 or more parts to paper. Once the Harold Nicholls Big Band was formed people came from far and wide to listen and dance to the dynamic sound of swing. The band performed on a regular basis throughout the state from the 1960s to the 1990s including several Governors Inaugural Balls. Harold was always adding new music to the Band's works and when he died in 2008 his hand written library of arrangements numbered over 200 songs and filled six cases. When he passed, his son, Bud, reassembled the band to play a few of Harold's pieces for the memorial service. The response was overwhelming. Musicians and audience agreed. This music must be played! And so the New Harold Nicholls Big Band was formed and continues to delight music and dance enthusiasts of all ages. We are privileged to have several of Harold's arrangements featured in The Big Band Broadcast.
