Artist Bio
Mike LaBroi has been playing guitar and performing professionally for over 25 years. He began playing guitar at age 9 by learning Motown tunes from neighbor’s, Tito Jackson (of the Jackson 5), Reynard Jones, David Gardener and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Musician Wilton Crump.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education in 1979. It was at Lincoln University where Mike developed his love for jazz and blues. Having the opportunity to play with some of his teachers on the weekend, he could actually apply the theory he’d learned in class.
After college Mike began to “pay his dues” by playing locally in assorted venues throughout Northwest Indiana. He played with local greats such as Billy Foster, and then later formed his own band. Later, Mike moved to the music-rich scene of Minneapolis, Minnesota. While there, he played with their local greats including, Frank Hooks (jazz trombonist formerly of the Count Basie Band) and internationally known jazz organist Jack Mc Duff (the man that helped launch the careers of George Benson, Henry Johnson, Mark Whitfield and many others). Mike had a regular jazz set at recording artist Prince’s club “The Glam Slam” on Sunday nights in Minneapolis Minnesota.
Mike’s musical influences have come from a variety of genres including Rock, R&B, Blues, and Jazz. His primary guitar influences have been the inimitable Wes Montgomery, George Benson and Henry Johnson. Some of his favorite guitarist locally are Dale Prasco and Marco Villerreal.
Through the seasoned development of his music and his style, Mike LaBroi manages a perfect blend of the art and business into his music. As the old legends evolve into musical icons, Mike LaBroi is strongly becoming a New Legend on the local jazz scene. His blues-based soulful playing is moving audiences throughout the Midwest & across the USA.
