What to Expect
This show is very easy to present. Derek drives to each venue and will bring his set. He will need help loading-in (one to two other people is sufficient). His technical needs are minimal with no specific lighting cues and this show can adapt to any venue quite easily. In small venues, he does not require amplification. In large venues, he will require a lavalier mic and will just need to plug into the house system.
This show can also become a lecture or general informational session on Theodore Roosevelt. Derek has researched a great deal on the life and career of President Roosevelt and will offer a great history lesson in a fun and entertaining atmosphere. This show is appropriate for all ages.

THE MAN IN THE ARENA
Derek Evans is a professional actor and scholar who has spent a career of almost 40 years engaged in educational presentations for schools, colleges, museums and libraries. He has conservatory training at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco and at New York University and holds bachelors and masters degrees from Northwestern University. He is a veteran of over 40 stage productions in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and San Francisco.
In addition to his legitimate theatre career, from 1969 to 1988 he wrote, produced and performed in educational programs in association with Chicago’s Urban Gateways. These totaled almost seven thousand performances for more than two million students over a period of twenty years and included Shakespeare, opera and American and British literary adaptations.
Since 1995 he has concentrated on living history presentations on Theodore Roosevelt, which have now totaled over 500 performances. In addition to the usual educational institutions, he has provided made to order presentations for:

He is a member of the Chicago History Museum and sits on the board of the Theodore Roosevelt Association, Chicago Chapter. He maintains a professional reference library of over 400 volumes with emphasis on Theodore Roosevelt and 19th and early 20th Century American history more generally. These include the complete published works of Theodore Roosevelt as well as Roosevelt’s presidential and gubernatorial papers and correspondence. He also maintains access to original source materials through the archives of Northwestern University, the Houghton Library at Harvard University, the Theodore Roosevelt Association, Dickenson State College, the Chicago History Museum and the Newberry Library.

THE MAN IN THE ARENA
THE MAN IN THE ARENA is a light equipment presentation with minimal technical requirements:
Set: The set consists of 6 free-standing pieces 8’ high x 5’ wide. These require about 20 minutes to assemble, but they can be preset and wheeled on and off in less than a minute. Minimum performing space required is 12’ deep x 24’ wide.
Lighting: A stage wash is all that is required. Other than bringing the house to half and stage lights up to start the show, there are no cues or effects are required.
Sound: For houses of fewer than 500 seats, or unless the venue presents extraordinary acoustical problems, no sound support is required. In the event it is necessary to use sound, a single lavaliere mic is all that is needed.
Set-up: 60 minutes is adequate for set-up and for strike.
For more than 500 audience members, a lavalier mic is all that is needed.
