In 2010, Judd Allan and Damon Covert felt a common call to write music to bless God's Church. They began meeting for 'Friday Night Writes' a few times a month. "Jesus, We Need You" a declaration of dependence, was born out of those first few sessions. Judd and Damon debuted the song at Easter time. Other songs would follow. "The Holy Spirit Song" and "Glorious Majesty" began in that first year, along with the song that would eventually be the band's first recorded single: "Altogether Lovely One."
As the music began to flow from these early meetings, Judd and Damon began to realize that fleshing out fuller arrangements would require putting a full band together. Brian Danielson, a mutual friend, began to join Friday Night Writes. Soon after, Luke Montgomery started sitting in on drums. Although Damon was used to playing bass in his previous bands, the group decided that a lineup with two electric guitars would allow more sonic options. Luke suggested his friend, Ben Miller, might want to play with the band. After a few practices, it was clear that the personal and musical chemistry was there, and Ben became Taking Ground's bass player.
The band geared up for a benefit event at a local restaurant in 2013 as a way to bless someone in need. Damon took some of Taking Ground's original music to an open mic at Fresh Grounds, a local Christian coffeehouse in late November 2013. That introduction would prove fruitful in 2014, as Taking Ground began playing out in earnest, beginning at Fresh Grounds. The band also led worship at local churches and a youth conference at nearby Thiel College.
Taking Ground will be living up to their name in 2015, moving forward with additional recordings of their original music and more live appearances. The band plans to record new singles by March of this year and compile a CD collection in late summer.
Whether leading worship at a church or youth event, or playing a coffeehouse, or recording new tunes to share, Taking Ground are intentional in their approach to their work. Music and life on purpose - Living out the importance of worshiping Jesus Christ.
