Born in 1989 in the Indianapolis, Indiana area, Stephen Sullivan (Pianist, Teacher, Composer, and Accompanist) has led one epic life. After a rough beginning to life, Sullivan soon discovered a passion for music and creative writing, composing his first music and short stories at the age of 4. Sullivan began informal piano study with his father, Kevin, at the age of 9. Sullivan briefly played soccer and Little League baseball before focusing solely on the piano at the age of 11. By age 14, Sullivan was competing in local piano competitions, such as the Junior Festival. Things really took off about halfway through college, when Sullivan began composing again, as well as becoming a more serious pianist, especially while at the University of Indianapolis. After graduating in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in Piano, and a 3.3 GPA, Sullivan shifted his focus in the direction of teaching music in the classroom. He studied in the Transition to Teaching program (online) at Indiana Wesleyan University, and completed this graduate study in June of 2017, thus earning his Initial Practitioner's License to teach Choral and General Music (P-12), toward the end of the month. More recently, Sullivan has been a part-time substitute teacher with a local temp agency, as well as a nearby school district. He completed his first album of original music in the Summer of 2016; it is entitled "Journey of a Student." Most recently, Sullivan has been learning more Classical pieces, and has redoubled efforts to advertise his services, redesigning business cards and flyers, and has begun advocating for understanding of people on the autism spectrum, namely, by reviewing books about this topic. Sullivan is active on YouTube, SoundCloud, has a Facebook fan page (S. C. Sullivan), and has joined Wrong Planet, a website for people on the mild end of the autism spectrum. Last week, Sullivan "finished" learning a Debussy piece entitled "The Sunken/Engulfed Cathedral." He soon plans to prepare two other Classical piano solos, Rachmaninoff's "18th Variation", and Bach's "Italian Concerto, 3rd movement." Sullivan is also continuing to seek work as a Music Teacher and Pianist, and has several years of experience working as a Pianist or Interim Music Director at some area churches.
Additional Booking Notes
I play acoustic pianos when available, but also have access to a full-sized keyboard and audio equipment. I would require an outlet or outlet strip, as well as something to transport the equipment and keyboard in.
Influences & Inspiration
I am influenced by diverse groups and solo artists, ranging from Coldplay to Chuck Mangione, from Bach to Ben Folds, and so on. However, I mostly just think about how I personally want to perform the music I'm playing. I am more influenced by what I can do with the music than by what others have done, but I also spend a lot of time determining how to go about making the music my own.
