What to Expect
Audiences will enjoy a trained, experienced and highly entertaining presenter who will bring music, compelling stories and positive motivation with great energy at a grand pitch. Those with or without hearing or health issues will find my life's journey to be of great value in assessing and continuing their own.
Stu Nunnery is a musician, composer, recording and performing artist, actor and activist. His various incarnations have taken him into a successful career in the music industry; into radio and television advertising; into film, video and theater: and across the nation, speaking before audiences in government, business, education, food and agriculture and the health and consumer sectors.
In 1973, Stu released a self-titled LP on Evolution Records. Two songs from that album, “Madelaine” and “Sally from Syracuse” would reach the top 100 on the US Pop Charts. In 1974, another recording, “Lady It’s Time To Go,” became the #1 record in Brazil. In 1976, Stu was signed to Epic/CBS Records and began a prolific career in the advertising jingle business. Stu served as writer, lead vocalist and/or ensemble singer on national advertising campaigns such as “I Love New York” and for such companies as Nationwide Insurance, McDonalds, Beneficial Finance, Budweiser Beer, General Motors trucks and Ford and Dodge cars and many others. In 1978 he composed “I’m Walkin’ Right Down the Middle of Main Street USA” for Walt Disney Productions, a piece which remains today one of Disney’s signature parade themes.
Between 1978 and 1982, Stu suffered the effects of a serious hearing loss that would end his musical recoding and performing career for more than 30 years.
In the intervening years, Stu worked I n the natural products industry, led two non-profit organizations dedicated to foods, nutrition, sustainable farming and children’s health issues. In the early 90’s, he launched an acting troupe called “Foods & Company; ” served as principal writer, performer and/or director for live and broadcast musical, theatrical, comedic, and repertory performances in commercials, self- penned radio commentaries, one-man shows, trainings and seminars, industrials, plays and feature films for, among others, Columbia and Tri Star Pictures (“Philadelphia,” “The Age of Innocence”), PBS ("Lincoln and Seward"), as well as for the Philadelphia Repertory Theater ("The Imaginary Invalid.").
His has spoken before among others, the RI Council on Deafness and the Hard of Hearing,, US Department of Health and Human Services, the Food & Drug Administration Office of Consumer Affairs, the US Department of Agriculture, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, the American Dietetic Association, the National Children and Youth Garden Symposia, the National Conference on Older Women, and the National Community Food Security Coalition.
In 2014, Stu announced that he would resume his music career and launch a multi- media advocacy and awareness campaign called “Talk to Me – The Messenger is the Message” and “Rebuilding the Musical Self.” Stu is currently contributing articles for "Open Ears" an international blog published by Phonak, his hearing aid company, and was recently featured in the Huffington Post where he now has a byline, offering insights into his life and work and inspiration to others about how to negotiate the hard terrain of a lifetime with hearing loss.
Stu Nunnery is a graduate of Princeton University with a degree in Sociology and teaching certificates in Secondary Education. Throughout his life he has studied piano, voice, acting, improvisation and public speaking in New York, Philadelphia and Providence, RI. His passions for food and optimum health have taken him through certificate programs in oriental dietary and health regimes and vegetarian and medicinal cooking.
Additional Booking Notes
I prefer to work close to and with my audiences, often face to face. A small raised platform or stage with podium are desired, though the room floor with a podium is acceptable as well.
When appropriate, I will provide musical instruments that need no amplification but will require electric outlets. I may use a Power Point presentation and will require a screen and projector. I also prefer to use the booker's laptop if available.
I will bring information and handouts about how audiences can find additional information about the themes I have presented.
Depending on distance, travel, accommodations and meals can be discussed at time of booking.
