John has been performing in some form his entire life. Playing guitar and trumpet in rock bands, jazz ensembles, concert and marching bands in his early days, then moving into stage and musical comedy and opera during college. John attended the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma City University, were he majored in music and vocal and musical comedy performance. John performed extensively with Ballet Oklahoma under the directions of Bojan Spassoff, and later Edward Villella, while also studying with noted teachers Conrad Ludlow and Yvonne Chouteau. He also appeared in numerous productions of The Oklahoma Opera and Musical Theatre Company, playing leading roles such as Chip in “On The Town”, and Doody in "Grease". John played Will Parker in "Oklahoma!" at Discoveryland, the National Outdoor Home of the show "Oklahoma!", and Don (the Gene Kelly role) in “Singing in the Rain” at the Crown Uptown Theatre in Wichita.
He also toured with Peter Palmer and Hollywood icon Ruta Lee in “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” and worked in many regional productions including Pirates of Penzance” with John O'Hurly at Casa Manana, played Caleb in “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” with Tony Winner Susan Watson, and “My Fair Lady” with Noel Harrison. John danced in “42nd Street” for Broadway Choreographer Randy Skinner at the Darien Dinner Theatre in Darien Connecticut and has appeared in productions at Music Theatre of Wichita, Beef and Boards in Indianapolis, Casa Manana in Fort Worth, and productions on both coast.
John was on the teaching staff of the Seth Riggs Vocal Arts Studio in Los Angeles, and was the personal assistant to Seth Riggs, John appeared in the movie “The Bear” with Gary Busy, as he played an Alabama football player. Vocally, John has sung backup for Barry Manilow, and has sung with Opera Northeast, Denver Opera, and Cleveland Opera.
In New York, John was a scholarship dancer at Steps on Broadway, and later on the management staff. He also received a scholarship for Opera Study at the John Atkins studio. John's tap background starts in Oklahoma with Carveth Osterhaus and protege of Bill Bojangles Robinson, Bill Graham. In New York John studied with Alan Onickel, Leslie Lockery, and Jan Mickens. Other teachers of influence include Patty Wilcox, Michael Owens, Kathy Sullivan, Michael Vernon, and Simon Dow. Also in New York, John performed improve comedy with Lost Cat Productions, Gotham City Improve, and studied acting at Playwrites Horizons
