What to Expect
Above all else, Samantha values professionalism. Her goal is to enhance your event by providing high quality music that's worry-free. Not sure exactly what you want? Samantha can work with you to identify the right kind of music for your event, whether it's classical, jazz, pop, rock (yes, really!) or something else entirely. Her skill as an arranger and love of a challenge makes almost anything possible, but she'll also let you know if she thinks something isn't going to sound the way you want it to on harp.
Demo CD available upon request. Will travel up to 120 miles from Philadelphia. (Or maybe more if you have an exciting offer!)
Equally comfortable in a sophisticated, classical setting as she is onstage at a local club, Samantha is highly versatile and flexible. Samantha studied classical harp at the Eastman School of Music under Kathleen Bride and then studied with Heidi O’Gara at the University of Virginia. She has performed with numerous regional and university orchestras, as well as studio orchestras for such recording artists as McCoy Tyner, Olivia Newton-John and Connie Francis and popular touring shows like Video Games Live and A Salute to Vienna.
In 2003, she and her mother, Andrea Wittchen, world-premiered a two-harp concertino with the Lehigh Valley Chamber Orchestra titled "Earth, Wind, Fire" by composer Steven Sametz. She also premiered an extended concerto version of the piece with her mother and the Lehigh University Choral Orchestra in 2010.
Samantha has filled the role of parlor harpist at the historic Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan and also has appeared playing her harp in the 2009 movie, Law Abiding Citizen. She has been the Professional Associate for Harp at the University of Pennsylvania since 2005.
Samantha is also comfortable in a studio setting and has recorded music with her own band, The Wittchen Initiative, and other bands, including Neon and Shy and The Facebreaker. She is an accomplished arranger and regularly creates new solo and ensemble arrangements involving harp and other instruments.
Samantha is most interested in taking the harp to a new level by using it in contexts where it is least expected. She makes up one-quarter of The Wittchen Initiative, a two harp, tuba and voice group that performs an eclectic mix of music adapted for this unique instrumentation that runs the gamut from jazz standards to modern radio pop selections to original tunes. Their music has been described by David Howell of The Morning Call as "a cross between chamber music and an 'indie' release you might hear on an alternative radio station."
Additional Booking Notes
Two heads are better than one! In addition to performing solo, Samantha also performs with other musicians. If you're looking for a combo involving harp and another instrument (like flute, violin, voice....even tuba!), let her know. Odds are she can make it happen!
And if you're looking for something unconventional (and super fun!) for your next event, why not consider The Wittchen Initiative, a two harp, tuba and voice group that performs an eclectic mix of music adapted for this unique instrumentation that runs the gamut from jazz standards to modern radio pop selections to original tunes? Your guests are guaranteed to have never heard anything like it before!
