About Rufus Ray

I'm a dynamic performer! Huge song repertoire consisting of rock & roll, alternative, folk, 80's, and (with the help of my Akai Headrush looping pedal) dance hits! Every show is unparalleled with excitement, and I love catering to the crowd specifically to add that personal touch to each experience. I've been told my voice is somewhere between Joe Cocker, Steven Page, and Steve Winwood; and I take those as serious compliments! Bottom line: I love to perform and push myself as much as possible!

He made our party. Everybody had a great time. His voice and playing skills are great. I would have him perform on my other parties.

OUTSTANDING !!!

By Mike P. on September 30, 2012

Joe performed at our Fall Party in Roswell for our approximate 100 guests. I saw one of Joe's prior performances at Brookfield Country Club and was impressed with his breadth and quality of music. However, I, along with all of our guests, was blown away by his performance at our party last night. His performance was a game changer for our party. He'll certainly be a key part of our future party plans.

This guy is off the hook!

By Anthony H. on September 23, 2012

I hired him to play for a private party in Cumming. He came out and blew everyone's mind with everything from his original music, which was awesome, to covers like snoop's Gin and Juice...He is very talented, kept the party going, and I am looking forward to having him back out for our next get together. Hire him...trust me, you will not be disappointed.

Bio

Born October 14th, 1985 in Yorkville, Georgia; to Tennis and Susan Garner. When my parents discovered they were going to have me, my mother once asked my father: "With your mechanic abilities and my creative/music talents; can you imagine what kind of child we're going to have?" To which my father jokingly replied: "...a piano repairman!"

I grew up in Paulding county, before I moved to start public school in Cobb at Ford Elementary; where I discovered my love for music in class, and continuing in church plays. I remember falling in love with the idea of taking your thoughts, and turning them into musical compositions. In middle school I picked up my brother's violin and enrolled in the Lost Mountain Middle School's orchestra program; however after three years, I moved on to team sports such as Wrestling and Football.

Through most of high school, I spent most of my time listening to and discovering new music. I inherited my parents record collection, exposing my ears to Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, and the Moody Blues. It wasn't until I graduated high school, that I'd receive my next instrument from my mother: an Epiphone DR-90 acoustic guitar.

At first, I wasn't sure if I'd excel at the guitar; I would look up some tabs online, but all of my attempts wouldn't sound like the song was supposed to. Barre chords absolutely destroyed my index finger, and it took a very long time to develop workable callouses. After a few months of pushing myself to learn some basic songs, I started getting the hang of it, and soon started inviting friends over to "jam". I'm thankful for these people, because they were the ones who provided encouragement, and ultimately got me out of the house and performing in front of a crowd for the first time.

The first performance I gave was inside a Walmart break room at 3am. I was working the overnight stock shift, and once a month we would have a pot-luck dinner, and I decided that I would attempt a few songs for a room full of co-workers. I played All Along the Watchtower, Bad Moon Rising, Ain't No Sunshine, and a David Gray tune that I've forgotten by now. Needless to say, I was extremely nervous, but everyone told me to keep going. At the end, I received numerous compliments on my voice and guitar-playing.

Shortly after, a friend of mine informed me about a few open mics throughout town. The first one I attended was Mellow Mushroom across from Kennesaw State University. The first time playing here could not have gone worse! I was so nervous I forgot the lyrics to a Neil Young song I was playing, which threw my pitch off, and ultimately I had to stop the song short.
The guy who runs it (by now he's a long-time friend!), was essential in boosting my moral and told me to keep coming back, and that I'll only get better with time.

Well, that advice has definitely paid off ten-fold, because now I'm consistently going out and playing around town, and I've got over 500 songs in my repertoire! That's what's so wonderful about music, there's always something new to learn. I'm constantly listening to new music on the radio, and when I find something I really enjoy, I add it to the list. I've met a lot of people along the way, and I'm proud to be a part of the local music community.

Currently, I've got some steady booking @ Johnnie MacCracken's Pub in Marietta Square, and I'm adding new venues & bookings to my calendar every day. I look forward to branching out and hitting the road soon!
