Rob Garland is a professional musician with a passion for all things music and the guitar, with over 20 years of playing and teaching experience. He has had a varied career (so far) including extensive gigging/touring, composition, session work, film scoring, product demonstrations and tuition clinics.
Rob released a selection of original compositions in 2014, a 5 song E.P. Seven Voices in March 2016 and a new instrumental entitled Of Peace (Guitar Meditation) in October 2016. Stream and download tracks on his website.
Rob grew up in South East England, played in a diverse array of bands, studied at Canterbury Christchurch University and later studied jazz improvisation with guitarist Jimmy Bruno. In his mid-twenties Rob moved to the US and split his time between teaching and performing with his jazz/blues group Rob Garland & The Blue Monks. The band released several albums of original music and played hundreds of gigs at festivals and clubs as well as international television and radio performances.
After being featured in numerous guitar magazines Rob's first instructional book entitled Jazz For The Blues Guitarist was published through Cherry Lane Music in 2007, which led to him working for TrueFire.
Currently Rob lives in Los Angeles where he writes & performs with various musicians including his group Rob Garland's Eclectic Trio.
He is a guitar instructor for TrueFire, with an online interactive classroom Guitar Babylon and courses entitled The Guitarist's Pentathlon and Chord Navigator: CAGED Triads. Rob also teaches via Skype. See the Tutorial page on his website for more information about lessons. He also records session guitar parts from his studio in Los Angeles.
Rob is influenced by "everyone from Joni Mitchell to Frank Zappa."
Musicians Rob has worked with include Jimmy Haslip (The Yellowjackets), Andy Sanesi (Scott Henderson), Tony Newton (Gary Moore) Mick Stevens (Brand X) and Gus Thornton (Albert King/S.R.V.)
