Reshana Marie comes from the Sweet Water Junction Band, a tradition passed down since 1949... She is very proud of it’s history. In fact there is so much history to this family's music that it can’t be written in one letter. Going back to the very start of this band's musical journey, it all started w/ David McDowell’s father Porter McDowell. Porter was born 2/29/1916 in Patesville KY. Porter was raised w/ 3 brothers & 2 sisters. He received his education working in the family coal mine. During the Great Depression at the age of fifteen Porter left home by hopping a freight train (which was common practice during the depression) & joined the CCC in Seattle,WA. President Roosevelt's New Deal plan to help people during the harsh economic time. After Seattle Porter set out for the Midwest, he worked his way through Chicago,IL & in 1936 ended up in Ft Wayne,IN. There he called for his family to move up from KY to this “prosperous” industrial city. Porter had started playing home grown bluegrass music w/ his family when he was a child in KY. Those were the days of the front porch gatherings which produced some very awesome talent that still influences our music today. Keeping in mind no TV in those days & only the well off could afford a radio, so a community would gather at a neighbor’s house & entertain themselves. After arriving in Ft Wayne Porter decided to work w/ a band to make some extra money & that was the start of a legend.
By 1949 Porter was working w/ bands that opened doors & future possibilities for his son, David, as he started his own musical career. Porter along w/ "SLIM" Adams performed many times on the historical live Chicago radio station WLS, for the National Barn Dance. Porter was also a regular every Sat. morning on Ft Wayne, Indiana’s WOWO live country music program & radio station WANE w/ band members, "Slim" Adams & Johnny Loveday. He played w/ some of the legendary greats from those days like Roy Rogers, Tex Ritter, Little Jimmy Dickens, Carl Smith, Porter Waggoner, Roy Acuff & Ferlin Husky to name a few. Porter along w/ "SLIM" appeared many times at the historical Buck Lake Ranch in Angola, IN. Porter was also a Co-Writer of a song that Tex Ritter had charted in 1951. Also in 1951 Porter, just happened to be in Nashville "in the right place at the right time", was given by Leo Fender of the Fender Corporation, the 3rd Fender Bass off his assembly line for him to try out publicly as a country Bassist. It was a Fender Precision Bass, the 3rd of it's kind. The first being in Leo's Possession with the second one still in the factory. Interestingly enough, several later years Porter lost that same bass in a poker game! Porter’s name had been included in the original Country Music Hall of Fame on Music Row, as one of the early pioneers of country music.
When you listen to some of the stories that Porter had to share, you could hear history in the making. He used to say “We traveled w/ a 5 piece band in a 1941 Packard Hearse w/ my old stand up bass fiddle stuffed in the back”. My,how times have changed. Porter McDowell is the Grandfather of Sweet Water Junction. If you take time to really listen to this excellent family’s music, you will hear the product of those seeds planted so many yrs ago. History is still in the process of being made. The beginning of a family tradition that is still alive today. Porter's son, David McDowell, born 6/11/52, was surrounded by the musical influence of his father as he grew up. In 1960 at 9 yrs old his dad handed him his old Gibson Archtop guitar & showed him 3 chords in the key of "C". They were “C”, “F” & “G”. Then he started taking lessons from Shorty Cook who was from the Music Manor in Fort Wayne,IN. He was the founder of The "Down Homers" which was the group Bill Haley performed in before he formed Bill Haley & The Comets,a national rock&roll band that toured w/ Elvis Presley & Buddy Holly. In 1964 Dave's life was changed forever w/ the appearance of The Beatles on Ed Sullivan Show. At 11 yrs old & absolutely enthralled w/ this new cultural music Dave sat down w/ his record player & played along w/ the fab 4 until he knew every note. At this time Dave's dad & he were going to his Uncle Tom’s house faithfully each Saturday night & playing until sunrise. Dave would stand in on guitar w/ his Uncle Tom, others & his Dad who played bass. This went on for several years & Dave attributes his learning guitar to Shorty Cook & those wild nights of family music. At almost 18 yrs old, 1970 was a turn around yr for Dave. He was the product of 1960's revolution mentality & not too easy on his parents or any other authority figure. He had left home early & joined up w/ a touring Hippie rock group called Peace&Love, guys in their late 20’s that played Rock music from 1950’s to current of Psychedelic Rock. Dave was w/ them for 9 mos. when they decided to retire the band. During that time he had the privilege to have backstage access to such acts as Bob Seger, Mitch Rider, Grand Funk Railroad, Steppenwolf, Alice Cooper to name a few. When those 9 mos. were finished, so was David. Although an exciting adventure for him the constant traveling & lifestyle had left him at a very low 145 lbs & was suffering from ulcers. Seeking medical attention, he stopped playing music altogether for several years. Now in his early twenties, he met the well established Nashville songwriter, Billy Nix who had a group named Billy Nix & the Ideals. Dave started playing bass for Billy until mid 1979. This opened up many opportunities to learn the business as he worked in concert, club & studio environments. In mid 70's David met & then married his present wife, SherryJo. In mid 1979 Dave started his own country band “Sweet Water Junction”. This band proved to be a popular, high energy country band in that tri-state area. David played lead guitar, sang bass & shared lead vocals w/ Sam Moffett Jr on bass & Scott Page on drums. The Sweet Water Junction Band has a past career that included working w/ many other Country artist, some as well known as;Dave Dudley,Del Reeves,Sonny Wright&Peggy Sue Webb, sister of Loretta Lynn. In 1987, Dave, while continuing in music, moved his family from Ft Wayne, IN to Sunny FL for the next 25 yrs. Through-out this musical journey & move, David & SherryJo kept busy raising 8 children. Although continuing in music after their move, most of their time was spent in raising the children. In 1995,w/ the children being musically inclined, the entire family started off on a faith journey that lasted 6 yrs as they traveled throughout the nation. During this time, Sweet Water Junction Band consisted of & was known widely as The McDowell Family, singing & playing their own brand of, mostly original, along w/ some old favorite Southern Gospel songs. Appearing in hundreds of churches, festivals & concert halls through-out the USA. They recorded 7 musical projects & influenced the lives of countless people. During those travels they appeared w/ National Gospel Groups;Hoppers, McKiethens, John Rowsey w/ New Journey,Freemans,Phiefers,Wisnauts,Primitive Quartet,Kirk Talley & countless regional groups. In 2001 as the children grew & married, they settled in FL. They changed the format of their music in 2002, going back to their father's original roots of Country, the true sound of Sweet Water Junction band. They perform popular Country cover songs. As of 2019 the group has retired, although Reshana Marie has continued on playing full time with some of these original band members, now called simply "Reshana Marie" ... after recovering from a large inoperable cancerous brain tumor. She had to undergo high dose Chemotherapy at Duke University in Durham NC. Her last treatment was in April of 2017. The next month she was found to be cancer-free and the brain tumor completely gone. Following this recovery, Reshana had an intense desire to extend and share her love of music with others. She has now continued on with the music with some of these family members. David McDowell, the father of 8, passed the music down to his family, as did his father w/ him, and so the tradition lives on. (link hidden)
