What to Expect
A Native American Flute Performance is actually very enlightening! As the flutes are so unique, and rarely heard or seen before by audiences, question/answer sessions can result, descriptions of Flute History, special and simple techniques utilized, and bios of other well known flute makers and players.
The majority of time I will align myself in a spot whereby I am heard, while not monopolizing the event participants. I can also play as requested , in certain locations, and during requested times.
Native American Flute player for ten years. Got my start with Oklahoma Flute Circle, Jacobson House, O.U., Norman, OK. . Instructors included Doc Payne, Dr. Paula Conlon, and Terry Tsotigh. Have attended flute festivals and schools in Taos, New Mexico, with Robert Mirabal, Talequah, OK, with Randy Granger, Telluride Colorado with R. Carlos Nakai, Zion National Park with Arvel Bird, and Oklahoma 's Medicine Park with (link hidden)nlon and Sonny Nevaquaya. Other concerts were with Mary Youngblood and Ash Dargen, Oklahoma University. Have learned various techniques and styles from each festival or performance.
I can play in a performance,(festivals, solo acts, weddings, events, etc.), playing various songs, either traditional, or improvisational. I can play either indoors, or outdoors, and both are often inspired by Nature. A softer, background style is also an option, if more well suited to such settings as clinical settings, smaller spaced cafes, shops, patio settings, etc..With each song I can describe the flute of choice, it's maker, wood, and key, etc.. , or just simply play songs, uninterrupted. (In case of windy conditions I may need to request an indoor or sheltered location.)
I can supply all flutes and mic system, if required., and any other additional supplies. I am available within a 12 hour notice , minimum., preferably a 24 hour notice. I charge a reasonable rate of $50.00 hr, and accept tips. I expect a 10 minute break within every hour. Performances that extend past a 1.5 hr. limit will require an increased fee of $75.00 hr..
I work best with clients that can supply an adequate prior notice, at least a 48 hr. notice, as my songs , being mainly Improvisational are also customized to your particular event or request.
My choice of instrument , the Native American Flute, delivers a very unique sound , and every flute and song is unique and different from the next. Because of that quality with this instrument an added element of surprise and unexpectation is a positive result with each song. If you are seeking an uncommon, but special sound and added interest to your event, the Native American Flute will not disappoint!
Additional Booking Notes
The Native American Flutes are susceptible to shutting down in windy conditions. Playing outdoors is fine, as long as the location is somewhat sheltered, or if fortunately , it is a calm, almost windless day. I can play sitting or standing, and am not particular about lighting. I can play either on a stage, or ground level. A table close by is necessary for holding the variety of flutes., etc.. The flutes often allow for quick and easy set up, and portability to various locations, another added advantage.
The set list consists of a collection of native flutes on a stand, (majority # may be 5-6.). A small table holds the flutes and added items. If adding a mic system, I have a small mike I can use , and an amplifier, though a newer amp system , perhaps with available mike and stand, if provided , may be best.
