Born in Cuba, the son of Jamaican immigrants, and raised in a military family between Texas and Virginia, Nate Emmanuel’s musical eclecticism is no doubt a reflection of the diversity of his life experience. Nate spent most of his childhood dreaming of being a visual storyteller (read “comic book artist”), illustration being his first artistic craft. At the age of 15, Nate was confronted by the truths of scripture that he had grown up hearing and assuming in a way that would change the trajectory of his life. He called out to Jesus who sacrificially bore the weight of the retribution, redemption, and reconciliation that Nate had been ignoring his whole life. After his conversation, Nate looked to music that would help stay his mind on truth amidst the multitude of distractions. At 16 he found a deep love for Christian hip-hop. While freestyling on the tail end of songs Nate began to wonder “I wonder if I could try this?” Suddenly, writing became an exciting new outlet for the things he was learning about God and life.
When Nate was in college, and as his musical tastes and interests began to expand, he eventually found himself writing more “singing songs”, as he called them, than “rap songs”. In Spring of 2016, post-college, Nate released the Foreigners EP, which was mostly rap laced with singing, in collaboration with friends from his days in college. Inspired by youth that he spends time with in Charlottesville, VA and hearing the music they listened to, he thought to himself, “What am I doing?”. He had a fresh reminder of the importance of music and sought to use his gifts more intentionally. Foreigners was an eclectic and experimental first project, exploring the spiritual implications of the word as an apt metaphor for the Christian life. In May of 2018 Nate is slated to release his second EP, Unravelling. No less experimental than Foreigners, Unravelling is a self-produced project. In the time Nate spent on Foreigners he had developed a new voice and style that was ready to be released, unhindered by catering to the beat of someone else's drum. The lyrics of the new EP were written in the cross-section of praise, prayer, and introspection with a good dose of Nate preaching to himself. The sound of the project weaves a narrative of Nate’s foray into production, characterized by a childlike imagination, layered simplicity, and the decision to release more of those “singing songs”. The result is a blend of pop and hip-hop that aims for depth and reflects numerous musical inspirations.
