What to Expect
I like to arrive at least a half hour to an hour before the stated start time of a performance, so that I can set up, tune, and get settled in before things start.
I generally only need about four square feet of space for myself, the harp, and a music stand.
On the rare occasions that amplification is required, I have equipment that I can bring with me. This should be included in the contract.
When Michele Mountain plays the harp, it can be hard to tell where she stops and the music begins. That’s what happens when you combine over 25 years as a working harpist with the sheer gratitude of someone who loves their work.
Michele has played at hundreds of weddings, churches, hospices, senior centers, corporate events, historical period events, coffee shops and book stores on both the East and West Coasts. She has also taught for over two decades to students ranging from the very young to the very old, released two full-length independent CDs that she sells at gigs and independent music stores, and performed and spoken at harp conventions. All while raising two little girls with her husband.
While Michele mixes in everything from classical to pop in her solo and ensemble performances, her forte is in traditional Celtic and Irish folk music, as well as religious music. Her warm and evocative voice is a strong accompaniment to the tasteful arrangements and precise patterns of her instrument, and betrays the same joy in performance.
As her body of work shows, Michele is a strikingly versatile performer, with the ability to always be appropriate to the setting and venue. Whether she’s performing at a Labyrinth walk outdoors in the elements, alongside a parade route for a charity event, or indoors in a modern amphitheater with amplification, the performance is the same – a celebration of music and life that brings joy to every heart. Whether the setting is formal or relaxed, joyous or devout, she is always in tune.
Michele’s harps include 30 and 34-string lever harps, and a portable 25-string “lap” harp for use as a strolling minstrel.
Additional Booking Notes
Amplification is rarely required, as my harp and I are quite loud, and usually have no trouble being heard in most locations.
Amplification for my harp and myself consists of a pickup microphone embedded inside my harp soundboard, attached to an 1/4 inch jack. A vocal microphone and stand also ends in a 1/4 inch jack.
I have a stand alone guitar amplifier.
Influences & Inspiration
My influences are as varied as the song styles I play, including but not limited to medieval and renaissance music of the British isles, folk music of both England and America, Scandinavian music, Classical music, Sea Shantys, Popular Ballad music of the 1960s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and the millennium.
The list of actual bands and groups is nearly endless. I enjoy playing everything from Bach to the Beatles, from the Dubliners to the Doors, Van Morrisson to Green Day. I also sing Disney tunes, Show tunes, and Children's songs.
