A great show, that's fun and entertaining.
Maynol was born in Washington DC on August 1975. Early on as a child Maynol was exposed to a large genre of music. He recalls, “My father listened to music from The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. I would stare at his record covers while listening to The Beatles album “Help.” My father loves The Beatles and had all of their records.” In the late 80s, Maynol’s first instrument was the violin which he quickly dropped as a teenager when he got possession of his first drum sticks. He was studying in Buck Lodge middle school and remembers, “Drumming was my life. We lived in a small apartment and I really couldn’t make any noise, so I would set up pillows and practice that way. My first drum set was an old, beat up, 1960s, blue sparkle Stewart drum set. When my father later saw that I was serious about drumming, he then got me a brand new, 5 piece, Pearl Export drum set.” From that moment on his passion for music grew as he began to learn the piano in high school. In 1994 he attended the Drummer’s Collective School of Music in NYC. There he learned a variety of styles and techniques. Once back home, Maynol began working at the Washington Music Center. He met a number of musicians there which led to him joining rock bands such as Ring and Industry Overflow, earning him experience in the DC music scene. In 1996 a Latin rock band called Eclipse was in search of a new drummer. They took interest in Maynol and asked him to audition. He quickly landed the spot and took off on a small tour to El Salvador. After the tour, he recorded an album with Eclipse titled “Asesinos En El Tiempo,” Shortly after he went back on the road for the “Grito the Paz” tour. Touring countries like Peru, El Salvador and Dominican Republic was an eye opening experience for Maynol. He learned a lot about people and their culture during his journey. After years of drumming with a variety of bands, Maynol made the decision to learn how to play the guitar. “I wanted to expand my musical horizon. It was an instrument I knew I could learn which would allow me to further express myself. I had nothing else to lose and everything to gain. I knew initially that it was going to be difficult. I didn’t know any musician locally at the time that had successfully made the change from drumming to guitar or even pianist. While many around me questioned the decision to focus on yet another instrument, I knew that it would further enable me to reach my ultimate goal of becoming a composer and finally a lead singer. I had reached a good place in my life, was still growing, learning and improving. I felt I had a lot more to give and wanted to express myself.” He practiced every day for months, pouring all he had into his new found direction. After learning the guitar, he began to play piano and bass, eventually beginning to compose his own music. Maynol spent many nights in his home studio coming up with the right sounds which he would later describe as “dark, sexy, melancholy rock melodies of lost love.” To him, “Music is like writing a great novel, the right words can last forever or in my case the right song can be timeless.” Maynol’s credits The Beatles the album “Rubber Soul” as a big influence in his growth and to this day still references back to that album whenever he needs inspiration. Bands like U2, INXS, Cold Play, Dido and Nick Cave all have a certain spirit that he tries to incorporate into his own music. After 5 years in the studio shaping his sound, his first debut album titled “Night After Night” marks a new chapter in his life. His voice is unmistakable, with fantastic poetic lyrics, beautiful melodies and great accompaniments. Maynol has broken through the limitations of what a simple drummer can achieve. From learning how to play the drums, guitar, piano, and bass, he has become a composer and singer. Maynol is showing no signs of slowing down as he has already begun to create his second album. He strongly feels, “My job as a musician is to put out honest and soulful music. If one person would add one of my songs to the sound track of their life, then I feel I have served my purpose as a true musician.” “Before you know where you’re going, you have to know who you are.”
