Here are a couple of reviews:
"Martin Beal’s recent release "Smile" is a collection of songs that Beal delivers with great love for his work and father to whom this CD is dedicated. Full of passion, his voice grabs and keeps you as you listen to the stories that are told in his songs. Classics like "Over The Rainbow", "On The Sunny Side Of The Street", and "On A Clear Day" are covered very nicely by the talented golden voiced Beal. The musicians accompanying him are excellent and allow his singing to be a true instrument along with theirs. Singing Jazz is where I like Mr. Beal the best as his timing and delivery are excellent along with his fresh, crisp voice.
"Smile", the title cut written by Charlie Chaplin and later made famous by Nat King Cole, is another excellent display of Beal and his band's jazz presence, and they are very good. I like this song very much. It's lyrically solid and the way he delivers it is nice. It's full of passion for his father who's smile was ever present, and I can feel it in his music and hear it in his song -- well done Mr. Beal. "Blue Skies" by Irving Berlinis, the next to the last song, is done with a classic approach and jazz swing done at a quick pace. It is lively and quite a kicker. At the end Mr. Beal does a excellent job singing and scatting away as the band really delivers on this classic, doing it justice. I highly recommend this wonderful CD. Martin Beal's "Smile" is sure to put one on the face of music lovers and jazz enthusiasts."

MARTIN BEAL/Smile:" Opera, theater, Beal does it all and has been at it for
30 years, probably most of which has been spent swimming against the musical tides. The striking thing about this set of jazz/cabaret oldies is that he sounds like Gene Kelly doing a cocktail jazz date. Fun stuff that certainly doesn’t ruffle any feathers, its easy charm just has weekend listening written all over it."

Martin Beal – SMILE: Oh, yah, hepcats scattin’ all about… Martin’s jazz vocals on these 11 standards will make you grin & (perhaps, if you’re so inclined) sing right on along with him. He has some great players supporting him, and you’ll surely feel like you’re out at a smoky jazz cellar somewhere after hours. Scope out his cool interpretation of “Pick Yourself Up” to hear what I’m talking about. What’s most impressive about his style is that you can clearly tell he’s loving the performance aspects of it all. My favorite on the CD was Horace Silver’s “Song For My Father“… his approach to the tune lets you know that he’s “hip” to what this jazz thing is all about, and that sax behind him is killer! I give Martin & crew a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.96. Get more information at Martin’s website.
