Other songs include hits from Laura's award-winning CD, Kids in the City, which pays tribute to her kind of town - Chicago! This upbeat program engages children in dancing, singing, puppets and more. Laura's shows are fun, whether solo, or with her acoustic folk-pop band, which includes upright bass and drums.
Besides children's music, Laura can provide acoustic folk music for adult parties as well. Her warm, sunny vocals adds a nice element to all kinds of parties, for young and old. She can perform a vast repertoire of cover songs from the 1960s classic rock, up to current acoustic hits of the day, along with some golden oldies for the grandparents! Laura Doherty is a nationally touring children's recording artist with an ear for a catchy melody. Laura’s musical adventures first took listeners into the world of big-city-living, as seen through a child’s eyes, with her Parents’ Choice winning albums Kids in the City (2009) followed by the equally endearing Shining Like a Star (2011). Her 3rd release, In a Heartbeat (2014),is a collection of heartfelt, upbeat children’s songs that keep true to her folk-pop roots, using lots of acoustic instruments, and her latest Animal Tracks (2016) is a "best of" collection of Laura's engaging animal songs.
Laura found her place in the acoustic-folk world early on, picking up the guitar at age 16. Originally from Westchester, NY, she came to Chicago after college and soon joined the teaching staff of the legendary Old Town School of Folk Music. For over a decade, Laura was the Director of the Old Town School’s early-childhood Wiggleworms program. In 2009 she took a daring leap and decided to go full-time with kids’ music, showing an intense passion for creating sweet, folk-inspired songs for children and families.
Often joined by her band of Chicago talent on stage, The Heartbeats, Doherty has performed hundreds of shows at premier venues and festivals across the country, including Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music, Ravinia.
