Mary Jo Peña earned her Bachelors of Music Degree in Piano Performance from Northwestern University in Chicago then moved to New York City to pursue her Masters of Music Degree at Manhattan School of Music. Ms. Peña has recorded pieces for baritone and piano based on poetry by Pablo Neruda for Capstone Records, as well as contemporary vocal and chamber music for CRS records. Ms. Peña has appeared in Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall, on Vermont Public Radio and has toured in Japan and South America.
Christianna Valentina is a San Francisco Bay Area pianist and vocalist. She performs minimalist interpretations of Argentine Tango as well as Brazilian and American standards. With the spare accompaniment of piano, guitar and/or bass, Ms. Valentina brings to you a naked collection of paired down arrangements. Through the haunting passion and often tragic stories in Argentine Tango, the transitory joy and sadness of classic Brazilian standards, she balances out the set with the casual nostalgia of the American (and sometimes Italian) songbook. Whether it's smoky stylings or wailing cries, she emotes raw emotion into each phrase.
Melissa Bowman began playing flute in San Francisco at Hoover Junior High School. She then moved to Los Angeles where she studied with Norman Michea, David Shostac and Vic Morosco. Melissa began her university studies at California State University, Northridge and completed her music degree at University of North Texas. Melissa has also studied with Tango Flutist Paulina Fain. The first tango recording that caught her attention was "A Passion for Tango" by Sexteto Mayor, and she has been smitten ever since.
Mary Jo, Melissa and Christianna were first put together at the Tango for Musicians Conference held at Reed College in Portland, Oregon in June, 2016. We felt an instant musical connection and started making music together upon our return to the San Francisco Bay Area. The result is a delectable combination of refreshed tango standards and original arrangements.
Christianna's expressive voice will reach the depths of your soul. Melissa's flute artistry will surprise you with the beauty and variety of sound. And Mary Jo's pianistic virtuosity drives the ensemble through a range of emotion.
