Kenneth Terry, the Satchmo of the Seventh Ward, is a New Orleans trumpet player, jazz vocalist and band leader with more than 30 years of experience in performing, song writing and development and teaching.
Whether playing in clubs, special events and parades in New Orleans and around the world or mentoring the next generation of New Orleans musicians on Frenchmen Street, Kenneth’s greatest joy is sharing his music.
Kenneth was a founding member of the New Birth Brass Band and the original leader of the Junior Olympia Brass Band. He has performed with Rebirth Brass Band, Treme Brass Band, Olympia Brass Band, Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Orchestra and many other New Orleans groups.
Mr. Terry called me several times a day including on my wedding day. I had to explain to him that I couldn't talk to him that morning as I was getting ready for the wedding. Later, my phone was buzzing as I waited to walk up the alter. Some communication is totally necessary. I understand that, but he has even called us since the wedding. I had no intention of writing a review, but he called me again late last night while I was already in bed. It's been nearly a week since the event. He's been paid. I ignored the call.
He called to shake us down for more money after we agreed on a price. Unfortunately, my husband caved as the band was part of our wedding day entertainment. Mr. Terry implied that he might not be able to get the band into town without raising the price - he had us over a barrel. This is bad business.
Within the same week (the week of our wedding), he called demanding that we pay him in cash. This isn't really a problem, but he did it with very little notice before the performance. It was just another last minute demand.
During the actual second line, the band members were shaking or guests down for tips rather than allowing the guests to enjoy their experience. One of the band members stepped on my dress and pushed me (the bride) throughout the entire second line.
Once we reached the reception, the band failed to play the agreed upon amount of time and left almost immediately.
In a nutshell, the band harassed myself and my husband with phone calls before and after the event, insisted at the last minute that they needed more money because we wouldn't be able to book anyone else in time, and didn't perform for the amount of time that we agreed on.
Now for a positive: the music. It was solid. They played what we asked them to play and it sounded fantastic.
My wedding was a wonderful experience. The ceremony and reception were beautiful. The only source of stress on my wedding day was the Kenneth Terry band.

Born in New Orleans, Kenneth became a fan of the trumpet at the young age of 7. At 10, he became the protegé of legendary jazz musician Milton Batiste. Mr. Batiste taught Kenneth many lessons about jazz, music and its history, one of the first of which was to listen and analyze the music before playing. After a session of discussing the song, its meaning and why it was written, the two would pull out their horns and begin to play.
As an astute student of traditional jazz music, Kenneth has perfected the craft of fusing this genre with hip hop, R&B, country and contemporary jazz. Kenneth’s music remains popular due to his ability to blend the elements of today’s music with his strong foundation of traditional jazz, which appeals to fans of multiple genres of music.
As an ambassador of the traditional heritage of jazz bands, Kenneth feels that the gift of music is one that should be shared with others. This belief led him to give free lessons to youth of the New Orleans area who share his passion for music. Terry’s expertise has spawned many your jazz bands.
