June’s Got the Cash was formed by lead vocalist Jenna Miller in 2008. Ever since the movie “Walk the Line” debuted she had a vision. Her vision was a “show band” but not just ANY show band…. A tribute to Johnny and June.
Miller stated, “I had no experience in running a band, in fact I made a million mistakes. All I had to do was believe in myself and the rest would fall into place. All of my sweat and tears have been worth the ride. We have traveled the Midwest and just this past year became International as we toured Canada. Sold out theaters, headlining county fairs, casinos… we finally made a name for ourselves. It’s an honor to play the lovely, and talented June Carter Cash!” Back in 1999, Jenna made her musical debut with record label La Musique Populaire with producers Eric Haugen and Ryan Bassler. She released Sunscreen’s single “Love You More” onto their Century of Song album. Jenna’s huckleberry humor and sweet songbird voice really come to life when singing with onstage hubby (Gene Hartman).
Gene Hartman is The Man In Black. Gene is originally from Nashville, Tennessee now residing in Crystal Lake, Illinois. He not only loves the music of Cash but lives it. Gene takes pride in bringing Johnny Cash back to the main stage and puts passion into every song he sings. Gene has been in previous country bands prior to June’s Got the Cash and will amaze you with his razor sharp baritone voice. “Close your eyes and just listen. Gene will tell you a story, take your breath away, bring a tear to your eye and make you believe all in one song,” stated onstage wife (Jenna Miller). Gene participates in the song writing community and his influences include Waylon, Hank JR, and the outlaw movement. Gene loves the history, love, laughter, and magic the show brings to their audiences.
Thomas Swenson started playing music in clubs and at dances when he was 14 years old. At that time, he was the youngest member of the local musician’s union. He performed with rock bands throughout the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s. Thomas has always had a passion for song writing and instrumental music. Thomas has been running a project studio for the past 10 years working on music for films and television. He plays electric and acoustic guitars, bass, and mandolin. His musical influences include early rock and rockabilly artists, in particular, the Sun Records artist roster. Country and folk music, early instrumental rock music and the great jazz guitar players of the 50’s and 60’s. Thomas loves performing Cash/Carter music and strives to perform the sonically innovative lead guitar lines of the great Luther Perkins with authenticity and honor.
Steve Justman is a lifelong Chicago area resident and has been a musician since age 12 when he started guitar playing and singing folk music. By age 16 he was also adept at playing banjo and bass and has been involved professionally in many areas of Americana music spanning into six decades. As a teen he was highly influenced by the country music coming out of both Nashville and Bakersfield from artists such as Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Bobby Bare, Buck Owens, and Merle Haggard. From the late 70′s to mid 80′s Steve was the bassist in the Chicago area country-rock band Pony Express. Following that were projects in bluegrass on both banjo and bass. For the last 10 years Steve also performs solo around the Chicagoland area. Performing with June’s Got The Cash has been a great opportunity to do something he really loves, and that is to play bass in a band performing the country music he loves.
Zac Dawson is truly a drummer’s drummer. Zac went from a humble trailer court home in rural Indiana to gracing the top stages in Chicago to touring North America with punk rock legends, The Misfits. Never content with one style he has played reggae, funk, classic rock, blues, hip hop, metal, punk rock, and now country. If fact you would be hard pressed to find a style he did not touch over the course of his 22 years of bashing the skins. Zac has graced the stages at the South by Southwest music festival in Memphis, The Congress Theater in Chicago, and opened up on national tours for The Misfits and The Adicts, in addition to local gigs for Night Ranger, Train, and Leslie West from Mountain. Zac is now exploring a whole new sound in the country/rockabilly realm with Cash’s catalogue. In short, Zac provides the rock solid beat that drives the June’s Got the Cash train.
