James received his B.A. in Music Performance in 2013 from Eastern Illinois University. It was during his time here that James played in every ensemble his schedule would allow. These included EIU's Jazz Ensemble, Wind Symphony, Blue Note Quintet, Orchestra, and Percussion Ensemble. This gave James the opportunity to perform alongside talented guest artists that visited the school. This included Jeff Hamilton (Diana Krall), Sara Caswell (Esperanza Spalding), Scott Wendholt (Kenny Garrett), Conrad Herwig (Clark Terry), and Bobby Shew (Woody Herman).
As if that wasn't enough, James also played in multiple groups outside of the university and performed in many venues around central Illinois. This experience playing in a variety of styles and genres allowed James to become extremely flexible in any musical situation. Some highlights were opening for classic rock legends Survivor (2011) and Kansas (2013) at the Sweet Corn Festival in Urbana, Illinois. James was also featured in the New Blood segment in the March 2014 issue of Drum! Magazine; an article that features outstanding undiscovered drummers.
Alongside an abundance of live performing experience, James is very well acquainted with playing in the studio environment. He appears on Pamela Machala's debut album, Golden Delicious, which was recorded at Pogo Studios in Champaign,IL and released in June 2012. In June 2013, James released his solo effort, JLM EP, which was recorded at Studio M in Champaign, IL; where he wrote and recorded all of the instruments himself. James also played drums on Matter of Days' self-titled debut, which was released in April 2014. Even with time constraints, James was able to successfully track drums for all 12 songs on the album within one day. James appeared on a few tracks in Pamela Machala's sophomore album, When I Get Home. These were recorded in August 2014 at The Pearl located in Minneapolis, MN and was released June 2015.
Recently, James made his debut at the Little Theatre on the Square in Sullivan, IL playing drums in their performance of Midlife: The Crisis Musical.
