Highway Down is a collective of three California natives mixing a blend of California Country, Roots Rock and Americana into a roadworthy brew of music that is capturing the ears of audiences everywhere.
Our musical influences range from Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, the Traveling Wilburys, the Beatles to the Eagles, America, Fleetwood Mac, Hank Williams, and the list goes on. Aside from artists, life in general & the human condition have the greatest influence on our music. At the end of the day, it’s all about the song!
At Highway Down’s creative epicenter is Bryan Conner, raised the son of a second generation Pentecostal preacher in a home where music reigned a close second to the almighty God. His father was also a guitarist well versed in the chicken pickin’ style of Chet Atkins, who along with any number of southern gospel groups provided the soundtrack to the numerous road trips to revival meetings around the country – a lifestyle that provided ample opportunity for Bryan to learn to sing, harmonize and play a number of instruments.
In his early 20s Bryan set off to Nashville to develop his songwriting craft and learn the music business, but was sidelined by a doomed marriage that would bring the tumultuous ups and downs in life that seem to be the perennial inspiration for so much great music of our time.
Bryan eventually returned to California broke, broken and hungry, but determined to resume his musical career. Through a mutual friend, he met bassist and studio owner Eric Scott Williams with whom he found a mutual admiration of artists and influences as diverse as Steve Earle, Vince Gill, Patty Loveless, the Beatles, Little Feat, Jeff Lynn, George Harrison & Tom Petty. More telling was an indifference to the sounds that were the soundtrack to of our generation’s childhood, from mindless electronica to the rock’n'roll excess of the 80s. Eric and Bryan spent the next two years working up demos at Eric’s home studio and it soon became apparent that a signature sound was emerging, something new and not bound by time. It was time to form a complete band and make a proper record.
They very quickly settled on drummer Gabe Trevizo, who brought a punch to the rhythm section that couldn’t be ignored. There is a real musical connection between the three members of Highway Down, an unspoken brotherhood that translates through the music as if it had always existed.
Highway Down’s debut EP was released in June 2011.
