I'm a music artist for children. My songs are upbeat, catchy, and appeal even to grownups! I promote the African philosophy of Ubuntu (humanity). I also engage the audience with storytelling, along with my puppet friends, Dionte and Baba Anansi.
We had Gigi come out for a show during our summer camp Imagination Station. She showed up on time and was dressed very cute and age appropriate for our campers. She brought her daughter who was would wonder around the class room and was touching things that should have been left alone. I felt she should have had more control over her daughter and could have been a little more friendlier. The show was just average more story telling than singing and interacting with the kids. The campers had a hard time following the story and at times looked bored. She has a terrific voice and I think if she did more singing age appropriate it would have been a better show.
Response from Gigi Gumspoon:
Thanks for your feedback. I'm not sure why you felt my 5 year-old daughter was an issue. I monitored her carefully while we set up. She's the same age as your campers and the classroom was full of toys that should have been put away to clear space for our equipment. She is a very well-behaved child who won a neatness award at school! I saw her briefly read a few materials and gently touch a few items, then put them back- nothing out of the ordinary. My daughter then sat down right next to your campers once the show started. We create child-friendly environments in which my child or any child should feel welcome. However, it was last-minute because I was not actually booked until three days before the show. This didn't give us a chance to line up childcare, as we usually do. I asked you ahead of time what you wanted to include in the program, so I told imagination stories as you specifically requested. If you had wanted more singing, I would have been happy to accommodate that. But I arrived in the best of spirits, which I do at all my shows. I have never been accused of being unfriendly- ever! So it was confusing to me that you would add that to the review. You answered the door with a frown that even my unshakable Gigi smile could not erase. Maybe because it was super hot outside that day? While I appreciate your feedback, we left the show feeling great because several of your kids rushed up to give us thanks and hugs. We also got positive feedback from your teaching staff. I've been an educator for many years, so I understand that not all kids love all forms of entertainment. However, since the vast majority of the audience had a good time, then mission accomplished!
You are an answer to thoughtful meditation. I want my son to have a creative memory of what's possible. And of where he' s come from. Birthday parties are my opportunity to share my African and Caribbean American experience with my colleagues, friends and family. You have incorporated items I dreamt about for my son's birthday experience. Thanks for taking the time to create educational fun and for bringing in the Anansi the spider stories my favorite series as a child (that opened my imagination of a world beyond the waters).

What to Expect
Gigi Gumspoon sings songs from her album, while weaving in interactions with the audience about each song. Then her young puppet friend Dionte comes by to hear a story. Magically, Baba Anansi, the wise old spider puppet appears with the magic griot book. After Gigi tells the story, her loveable-yet-grumpy friend (and DJ) King Meanie will learn the lesson for the day. Most themes are around the idea of "ubuntu." This encourages children to care for others and to treat everyone with respect. Everyone will have lots of fun moving, singing along, and laughing all the way!
“Greatness is a group activity, so let’s all be great together- Ubuntu!”
Gigi Gumspoon is a performance artist for young children, especially children of color. Her songs are catchy, upbeat, and progressive enough to appeal to grownups! Gigi promotes the African philosophy of “Ubuntu”, a sense of community and humanity. Her songs focus on social/emotional skills, such as sharing, listening to elders, and coping with disappointment. But she also sings about the alphabet, colors, and eating healthy foods. In her shows, Gigi fosters a love of literacy with the help of her puppet Dionte, Baba Anansi the spider, and her grumpy friend, King Meanie. She reads didactic tales from the magic griot book, and encourages the audience to have more “Ubuntu.” Fans of Gigi Gumspoon, called “Gumbabies”, will learn to not only love themselves, but each other. Once they hear and see The Gigi Gumspoon Show, kids of all ages are sure to become Gumbabies, too!
