FLOWER CITY VAUDEVILLE was founded in 2012 to perform in Rochester's first fringe festival. Today Flower City Vaudeville features the prodigious musical talents of Ward Hartenstein, the physical comedy skills of Richard Hughson, and the object manipulation artistry of Ted Baumhauer.
A family favorite at the Rochester's Fringe Festival (2011 to 2016), and the Ithaca Fringe Festival 2015 & 16 and winner's of the Andrew D. Dixon Award there in 2015. Since 2015 Flower City Vaudeville has been one of the most active artists listed with Young Audiences of Rochester.
Ward Hartenstein is a performance artist who claims that he can make a musical instrument out of just about anything. He is irresistibly drawn to things that make sounds – weird sounds, silly sounds, and even musical sounds. Someday he hopes to complete his musical masterpiece - a sonic invention known as the Oatmeal Splat-o-phone. In the mean time, he is delighted to engage in all manner of silly business with Flower City Vaudeville.
Richard Hughson began studying mime in 1976. Later adding martial arts, clowning, and physical comedy. He still works out regularly in order to pursue his passion, free-wheeling entertainment. Being an actor and director has rounded out his theatrical skills just in time to become a founding member of Flower City Vaudeville. “Working with Ted and Ward allows me to focus all my skills and comedic vision into one arena.” He says, “I could flip over it, literally.”
Ted Baumhauer, Ed.D., has been performing for families and children of all ages since 1994 from Wisconsin to Vermont and is a founding member of Flower City Vaudeville. He employs a wide variety of physical skills including juggling, ball spinning, slack lining, unicycle, whip cracking, and bad drumming. When not performing with FCV he delivers unforgettable and entertaining Keynote presentations and Leadership Development Programs.
