Iranian-born Rasa Mahmoudian is the former concertmaster of the Iran‐Austria Symphony Orchestra in Tehran and has held numerous positions with orchestras in both Iran and the United States. He was a member of the Youngstown Symphony in Ohio, the Westmoreland Symphony and the Butler Symphony Orchestras in Pennsylvania, and the Wheeling Symphony in West Virginia. He recently performed with the Peoria and the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestras. Rasa received his Bachelor’s degree in violin performance at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, and earned a Master’s Degree in Violin Performance at DePaul University in Chicago.
In 2012, While residing in Maryland, Rasa started collaboration with the director of the piano department of Howard Community College in Columbia, Dr. Kristina Suter, resulting in a violin-piano partnership named the Mahsu Duo. They continue to present annual recitals, which include programs that represent diverse perspectives and ethnic music of all nations along the standard repertoire.
He began his violin studies at the age of five in Iran and continued his music education with some of the best teachers in Tehran and the US including Dr. Olga Dubossarskaya Kaler, Charles Stegeman, Rachel Stegeman, Minsun Choi, and Setareh Beheshti.
Rasa is a passionate teacher and enjoys working with students of all ages on violin and viola. His interest in world music motivates him to spend most of his spare time learning Persian traditional music on Violin and Setar, or discover different styles of music such as Bluegrass, Jazz, Blues, and Balkan. Rasa has recently started learning Theremin, an early electronic musical instrument named after its Russian inventor, Léon Theremin!
