Flutist Esther Fredrickson, a passionate collaborator and avid proponent of new music, has won awards for her acclaimed performances, and has been privilaged to study and and teach around the globe. After performing Frank Martin’s Ballade as an Albuquerque Youth Symphony concerto competition winner, she continued her musical education at the Oberlin Conservatory (B.M. 2009), and the University of Oregon (M.M. 2012). Recent projects and achievements in the Pacific Northwest include collaborations with the Oregon Percussion Ensemble, chamber music recitals at MarshAnne Landing winery, and performances with the Eugene Contemporary Chamber Ensemble. Esther was also selected as a winner of the 2011 Ladies' Musical Club of Seattle solo competition. In addition to receiving a cash prize, she participated in a week long concert tour and outreach event that brought classical performances to over 2,000 school children in rural eastern Washington, and performed live on KING FM in Seattle. She was also twice awarded a scholarship from the Rislov Foundation.
As an undergraduate at Oberlin, award-winning performances of Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, and concerts with the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble enriched her appreciation for new music. There, she had the honor of participating in an Oberlin collaboration with new music ensemble Eighth Blackbird in the live-version premiere of Steve Reich’s Pulitzer Prize winning Double Sextet in New York City, Seattle, and San Francisco.
Past orchestral experiences have included performing with the Eugene Symphony, the Oberlin Orchestra in Carnegie Hall under the baton of Robert Spano, and studies at the Eastern Music Festival (North Carolina) and the Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific (Canada). Additionally, Esther has played in masterclasses of distinguished flutists Carol Wincenc, Keith Underwood, Trevor Wye and Luis Julio-Toro. In 2008, she spent a semester studying overseas, at the Sydney Conservatorium in Australia.
Her principal teachers have been Molly Barth, Michel Debost, Alexa Still, and Valerie Potter.
A teacher herself, Esther has had diverse flute studios in Oregon and New Mexico, with students ages 8 to 64. She taught regularly at Hummingbird Music Camp during the 2009-2010 school year, and worked as a substitute teacher for general music classes throughout the Santa Fe Public School district. At Oberlin, Esther had the honor of participating in the Oberlin Panama Project, a program that sends students to Panama to teach at an orchestral-based music camp alongside instructors from Panama and Venezuela. She also interned at an El Sistema-inspired program in Elyria, Ohio, through an educational outreach initiative of CityMusic Cleveland.
She has recently moved back to Albuquerque, and is now accepting new students.
Away from her flute, Esther has lived and worked on a several thousand acre conservation ranch in southwest Colorado, and loves backpacking and exploring the outdoors.
