What to Expect
Perfect for cocktail hour, you'll be hiring a well-dressed and professional ensemble who looks as good as they sound. I am available for more high-energy engagements as well, and can bring you energetic solo saxophone or chilled-out cocktail hour with my trio. Available to do requests in a thoughtful and imaginative way, with a very traditional jazz sound.
Driven by an endless need for expressing herself creatively, composer and multi-instrumentalist Chelsea McBride has burst onto the Toronto jazz scene. Still only 25, McBride has been named one of Canada’s top 35 jazz musicians under 35 by the CBC and was the inaugural recipient of the Toronto Arts Foundation’s Emerging Jazz Artist Award. She has performed at the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal, the Ottawa Jazz Festival, and the TD Toronto Jazz Festival among others. She’s also worked alongside many local jazz artists including Brownman Ali and William Carn and studied with acclaimed musicians David Occhipinti, Darcy James Argue and Mike Allen.
Born and raised in Vancouver B.C., Chelsea was surrounded and fascinated by music. She started playing piano at the age of 3, and saxophone throughout elementary school. By the end of high school she had already performed in competitions at provincial and national levels. In 2014, she graduated from the Humber Bachelor of Music program in Toronto, ON, and has since been making her impact on the Canadian jazz scene with her mature sound and multilayered approach to composition.
Whether it’s her big band (Chelsea McBride’s Socialist Night School), her pop-fusion band (Chelsea and the Cityscape), her jazz trio (Chelsea McBride Group), or her video game cover band (Koopa Troop), Chelsea is a diverse musician who refuses to stay in one creative box. Aside from her own projects, she also regularly performs with other local acts including the Achromatics, Blunt Object, Shrinehouse, and Skirt Check.
Chelsea can be heard around Toronto playing several shows per month. She has released three albums with Chelsea and the Cityscape and two with her Socialist Night School.
Additional Booking Notes
My usual trio instrumentation is myself on saxophone, electric guitar, and upright bass.
I usually require a PA to be provided (an extra fee will be added if I need to bring my own); there will also need to be nearby power for my bandmates to plug in their amplifiers, and having a chair available would be helpful.
Dixieland and brass band standards (adapted for trio)
Motown covers (adapted for trio)
Disco covers (adapted for trio)
Top 40 upon request
Original music upon request
Influences & Inspiration
I'm influenced by the greats - the full tone of Dexter Gordon and the melodic sensibility of Stan Getz. You'll get a very Chet Baker-y vibe from the trio performance, and for solo stuff I am capable of doing pretty much anything requested!
PA (if the room is big enough to require it)
Nearby power or extension cords
