Palm Springs area-based Harpist, specializing in Pop Harp styles: Standards, Latin, Broadway & Film, Light Classical. Available for your special occasion: Receptions, Weddings, Memorials, Dinners, Luncheons, Brunches, Grand Openings, Gallery Events, etc. Amplification as needed for indoor/outdoor venues. My style is very straightforward and often creates the illusion that a bass player is playing with me.
What to Expect
As I tend to play with a very straightforward edge, I create the feeling that perhaps a bass player is playing with me, which tends to catch people pleasantly offguard, and I often get asked if I'm playing with tracks, which of course, I'm not. I like to think of the sound of the harp as a hybrid of guitar and piano. Hear samples at www.christianchalifour.com
HARPIST Christian Chalifour was born in Syracuse, New York. His early musical journey was highlighted by a trip on his ninth birthday, when his grandmother took him on the train down to New York City to see and hear one of Leonard Bernstein's famous Young People's Concerts at Carnegie Hall, and was taken backstage where he had ten minutes of "divine inspiration" from the maestro.
After several tortuous years of piano lessons, Christian finally turned his attention to the harp in 1977, when he met famed pop harp legend Lloyd Lindroth in Anchorage, Alaska. Leaving behind his day job and the piano, Christian plunged wholeheartedly into the harp, and after only fourteen months, placed third in the Salvi Pop & Jazz Harp Festival & Competition in Santa Barbara, and launched himself on a "self-inflicted whirlwind tour of the planet" ...aboard cruise ships, in hotels and fine restaurants the world over, and for countless private engagements which have kept him ever busy and in demand.
In 1994, Christian moved to Palm Springs, California, and in 1995 became music director and conductor for Coachella Valley Symphony and their Buddy Rogers Youth Symphony, leading both orchestras over the next fifteen years. He recently founded his new Desert Chamber Orchestra in February 2012. Christian resides in Indio, CA.
Additional Booking Notes
I generally need a minimum space of approx. 4 x 4 feet for the harp and myself. Placing me on a slightly raised area (platform)helps, depending on the venue and traffic near me. I have a small portable 30x60" platform I sometimes bring & use. I also usually perform with a small amp to enhance the tonal output, so need electrical access.
