I'm a singer and speaker, backing myself up with guitar or piano, or bringing in partners or my band. Styles include folk, country, pop, classic rock, old standards, and a little blues, plus I'll be happy to learn most anything you request.
I also present the following with slides, music and historical and cultural narrative: Woodstock Memories (I was at the original in 1969); Judy, Joni and Joan (Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez -I sing like them); Immokalee's Fields of Hope (stories of immigrant farm workers); and Father Sanders' story (beautiful biography of a Trappist Monk who left his abbey in 1969, called to work with poor Hispanic farm workers.)
Carlene did an awesome job learning a new song for my engagement. Loved her!!
We had Carlene play with our Irish Rock band at Fitzgerald's St. Patrick's Day Party. She did a great job playing guitar, key boards and singing some great old irish favorites. We would hire her again!
What to Expect
I'm primarily a singer, with a broad range of notes and genres. Piano and guitar are instruments I love and use to back up my voice (or others). I work with clients, if needed, to help organize and create a program that works for their target audiences.
Carlene Thissen is a singer, speaker, songwriter, and author, living today in Naples, FL. Writing books came first, and led to writing music.
Her love of the agricultural town of Immokalee, (rhymes with broccoli) Florida, and its immigrant population inspired two books: Immokalee’s Fields of Hope and Called From Silence: The Father Sanders Novel, and much of her music.
When a song was needed for a video based on Immokalee’s Fields of Hope, Carlene wrote “Take These Hands.” Since then she has dedicated herself to performing, speaking, and songwriting. That is, in addition to her part-time job as Coordinator of a Farm Labor Supervisor training program at UF in Immokalee.
Originally from New Jersey, Carlene spent 30 years in a successful business career in the supermarket industry, where she was well known for her speeches and writings about current marketing technology. When she sold her consulting business, she turned more seriously to her lifelong love of music.
Her greatest joy is singing – folk, country, religious, light rock, a little blues, and classical. She sings in the choir at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Immokalee and is a regular feature at venues in Naples. She also plays piano and guitar at restaurants, parties, festivals and charity dinners, and was a founding member of the Ft. Myers-based Americana Community Music Association.
Carlene’s goal for 2016 is to expand her reach as a professional performer, to clubs, churches, colleges, music festivals and other venues locally and across the U.S.
A member of the Global Songwriter’s Connection Association, Carlene also visits Nashville several times a year to perform in singer/songwriter rounds, waiting for that one big hit!
Additional Booking Notes
I'm very flexible. I have my own PA system that will amplify my voice and guitar and/or keyboard for a reasonable-sized club. OR I can work with whatever you have available, as long as the sound comes out OK.

For speeches I usually want to show slides, photos, etc. so a laptop, projector and screen are needed (OR I can bring my own laptop). I have PA equipment but prefer not to bring it if possible.
