Carol Zoccoli is a comedian, actor and writer who made her name in comedy in Brazil and is now living in Toronto. She got her start writing jokes as a break from her Master’s thesis and never looked back. Six months after her first stand-up performance, she was named by the Brazilian magazine Época a “Break out comic in São Paulo.” Her style is playful but assertive.
Carol performs in Portuguese and English. In Portuguese, she presented her first stand-up hour “Não tô aqui pra julgar” (“I’m Not Here to Judge”) in 2010 in São Paulo. She also enjoyed performing twice at the all-night, outdoor, festival Virada Cultural, for an audience of 10.000 people. She has performed in the top comedy venues in Brazil and internationally for the Brazilian community in London, Porto, and Montreal (where she also had the experience of performing in French). She made multiple appearances in all major TV shows in Brazil, presenting stand-up bits and parts of her main acts, including a stand-up set at Comedy Central Brazil.
In English, she was one of the eight finalists of Jokenation in 2015, an international comedy competition hold by Montreux Comedy Festival in Switzerland. She was also a finalist at Sway’s Comedy Search last November - a comedy competition hold by Sirius XM’s Sway in the Morning, taped at Caroline’s on Broadway, in New York City. Carol was recipient of the 2015 Tim Sims Encouragement Award, award given for promising comedians by Second City Toronto and supported by the Ontario Arts Foundation. She performed at Halifax Comedy Festival in April, where her set will be taped by CBC and aired later in the year.
Carol has written and acted in several theatrical performances. In Portuguese, the comedy “50 Minutes” - which was part of the Curitiba Theatre Festival. In English, the sketch show “Dance Animal: Toronto”, winner of Best of Fringe Toronto in 2016. Also in English, she created and performed an original sketch show with the Second City’s Bob Curry Fellowship.
Carol has extensive training in improvisation and performs it regularly. Throughout her career, what she loved most was the period she wrote and hosted Weekend Update at Saturday Night Live Brazil.
