I am a classical organist. I substitute for church services, play recitals, play for church weddings, play for funerals, and play for other events that require music by pipe organ or a digital organ in the pipe organ style. I have 55 years experience, and substitute regularly in about 20 churches in western Virginia. My service area includes Rockingham, Augusta, Albemarle, and Rockbridge counties and the cities of Harrisonburg, Staunton, Waynesboro, Charlottesville and Lexington. Willing to travel farther for a fee. Also available to consult on purchase of a pipe or digital organ.

What to Expect
I am an experienced organist, choir director, accompanist, and instrumental conductor. I also arrange music for groups that I conduct. For weddings I will present a program of "gathering music" that will keep the guests engaged in listening rather than in talking. It includes music without specific "text" connotations so people can meditate or pray as they wish. I take pride in ending processional music at the exact time when all are in place. For funerals I tend to play a mix of gospel hymns and meditative organ pieces and like to play an exultant postlude based on "A Mighty Fortress." My goal is to make every organ sound at it's best, so I will come to the venue to prepare. My background includes instrumental teaching at the elementary through high school level, so I work well with instruments in a church setting. I have conducted our community band at commencements for Mary Baldwin University for the past 39 years, so understand the logistics of outdoor events.
I am a classically trained organist and am music director at Bethel Presbyterian Church where I oversee the music program direct the choir, play special services on the organ in lieu of the regular organist, and choose all music for services. I also oversee and coordinate the church's concert program. I was active as a guest or interim organist from 1982 until 2012 when I resumed a regular position. I play weddings and funerals throughout the Shenandoah Valley and Central Virginia and particularly enjoy playing historic instruments including a 1911 Estey, a 1915 Moller, a 1928 Moller, and a 1804 Longmire and Herron chamber organ, and in my college days the 1902 Ernest Skinner organ in Cabell Hall at the University of Virginia. I also direct the oldest-coninuous community band in the United States in Staunton Virginia, my hometown. Under my leadership the band has grown from 28 players to over 100 over the past 43 years.
Additional Booking Notes
For weddings I include a 30-minute phone consultation with the bride and or planner to go over music, venue, times, and logistics. I generally have 2 practice sessions at a venue where I'm playing on an unfamiliar instrument.
