Becoming an aerialist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Malin Bergman<\/a> has a long history in the gig industry, initially as a model and dancer. After retiring from dancing, she thought her performing days were behind her. However, in 2017, Malin discovered aerial arts and began performing in 2019, just before the pandemic hit. Despite initial challenges, she persevered, and today, Malin is a highly sought-after aerial artist in the New York City area and a Top Performer on GigSalad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GS:<\/strong> Tell us about your journey on GigSalad. What inspired you to join?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

MB: <\/strong>In late 2021, I bought my lollipop stand for a gig, which left me anxious about making money. So instead of waiting for gigs to come to me, I took proactive steps to secure my own by joining GigSalad. It proved to be a wise decision, especially during the slow period after the pandemic. At the time, I only had an Instagram account and no website. Although I had heard about GigSalad from friends, I wasn’t sure if there were opportunities for aerialists and hadn’t considered joining until then, but it paid off. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Setting yourself apart<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

GS:<\/strong> What sets your services apart? What unique attributes do you bring to events that lead to repeat clients?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

MB: <\/strong>I believe my success on GigSalad stems from my extensive footage of actual events, including corporate events and weddings. While some may find my profile less flashy compared to others, I prioritize showcasing content relevant to potential clients. This approach allows them to envision precisely what they’ll experience at their event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although I may miss out on bookings offering unique acts like flying trapeze, I focus on providing a clear representation of my services. I maintain a genuine, down-to-earth profile, which resonates with clients and fosters comfort. Additionally, I prioritize honesty and transparently communicating any limitations in my skill set to ensure mutual satisfaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Booking efficiently<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

GS: How has GS made the booking process easier for you? Are there any specific features or tools that you find particularly helpful?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

MB: <\/strong>I find it beneficial that clients must pay the full fee upon booking, although I understand it may not suit long-term event planning like weddings. However, for performers, this policy simplifies the process, eliminating the need to chase deposits or remind clients. The booking form is straightforward, with just the right amount of questions, and the messaging system facilitates clear communication. Overall, GigSalad provides a seamless experience for managing bookings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MB: <\/strong>Research and understand the rates for your art form in your area. Utilize GigSalad’s average booking costs as a helpful guideline, especially for newcomers to performing. It’s essential to value your work appropriately to maintain fairness and support the industry as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ensure your profile features videos from actual events where you’re delivering the service, particularly those commonly booked on GigSalad. While photos are valuable, diverse footage enhances your profile’s appeal. Aim for a conversational first-person tone in your profile to engage clients positively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t hesitate to seek advice, especially when transitioning to a new performance style like aerial. While some may be reluctant to share insights, uplifting fellow performers benefits the community. Market yourself authentically to attract the right clients, and don’t be discouraged by unreasonable expectations. Stay connected with other performers for support and networking opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my early days on GigSalad, every booking was a milestone, including my first GigSalad gig\u2014a birthday party in Philadelphia, where I arrived with my silks packed in a suitcase. The client’s kindness made it memorable, and subsequent gigs, including repeat bookings, affirmed my confidence in my abilities. Any positive review is also a significant milestone. Every gig contributes to the journey and reinforces the belief that I can succeed in this exciting industry.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
