Party Ideas

Ahoy! It’s a Pirate Party!

By Megan Price

With the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie taking over the screens, we’re guessing you have a little Jack Sparrow running around! Planning a pirate party is super fun and simple, and we have tons of ideas to help. So put on your eye patch, adjust the parrot on your shoulder, and let’s parlay…er, par-tay!

Pirate Party Decor

Do you have some old sheets laying around? The tattered the better! Repurpose them into an awesome pirate ship mast, or even create an entire ship for the perfect photo op.

What’s a ship without portholes? Create these super easy porthole decorations with nothing but cardboard, wax paper, bottle caps, and spray paint. These are great for turning your living room walls into a pirate ship!

Keeping with the pirate ship theme for your pirate party, check out these clever centerpieces! Get out your old friend (gold spray paint) and you’ll have cute decor in no time.

This may be our favorite idea for pirate party decor! Spell out some pirate slang or maybe the guest of honor’s name. Either way, decorating each letter with pirate-themed objects is absolutely adorable.

Looking for a cheap backdrop idea? Look no further than a plastic tablecloth! Any striped tablecloth will do; just pick one that matches your party colors. You definitely can’t go wrong with red, black, and white. You could even use these for a ship mast if needed! Or, hey, as an actual tablecloth.

Pirate Party Food

Taking plain ol’ food and turning it into themed snacks is one of the best things about throwing a party! Like this idea for using pretzel sticks as a pirate’s peg leg… perfect!

Every pirate needs his or her gold! And chocolate gold is even better. Whether you choose to give a bag of “gold” as a party favor or just leave it out as a snack, your guests will treasure this treat.

If you’d rather serve something a little healthier, try these veggie swords! All you need is carrots and cucumbers, and your dip of choice (if desired).

This idea is a little morbid, but the pirate life isn’t for the faint of heart! And if you can find a way to incorporate Little Smokies into your party, you’re doing something right.

Don’t forget something to sip on! While pirates prefer rum, some Caribbean Sea Water will be just as great. (And maybe the older pirates can add their own rum!) Simply mix 1/2 gallon of Blue Hawaiian punch with 1 liter of lemon-lime soda.

Pirate Party Games and Entertainment

Pirate games and activities are the best part of the party! Before your guests enjoy the festivities, help them transform into a pirate. Set up a “Tattoo Parlor” where they can apply themed temporary tattoos.

For something more interactive, hire a face painter who can apply pirate designs that even Davy Jones would love! Eye patches, hats, or swords can help complete the look.

Gather your mateys for a treasure hunt! Fill a kiddie pool with sand and bury plastic jewels, rings, necklaces, and coins. Give each guest a “treasure map” and bucket, and let them start digging! The treasure map can be an easy guide to help them know what to look for. Try this free printable:

If your party is outside, we love the idea of a “cannonball” fight! Just fill black balloons with water and let the battle begin. Or you could play the classic “balloon toss” game instead. Have your guests team up in pairs, with a few cannonballs for each. The pairs should line up facing each other a few inches apart, then one person tosses a balloon to the other. Next, take a giant step back, and toss again. Sooner or later, someone is bound to get drenched!
