5 Fun Easter Activities for Kids

By Megan Price

Spring has finally arrived! Embrace the pastels and get outside for a good old-fashioned Easter party. It’s the perfect way to kick off the most colorful season of the year. Easter egg hunts are a given, but there are lots of other fun Easter activities the kids and adults can enjoy!

1. Live Easter Entertainment

There’s nothing more exciting than having a real-life Easter Bunny visit your party, especially for the kids. The Bunny can pose for adorable photos, help the kids find Easter eggs, lead dances like the Hokey Pokey, and more!

Add even more smiles to the party by hiring a face painter to do traditional Easter designs like eggs, bunnies, and flowers. Some can even do more elaborate art with glitter or airbrush tattoos. If you need more entertainment ideas for kids, balloon twisters or storytellers are fun ways to keep little ones entertained indoors or outdoors.

2. The Amazing Egg Race and Egg Toss

You can’t go wrong with fun Easter games like egg races or egg tosses. These easy Easter activities only need people, eggs, and room to move around. We say these are ideas for kids, but the adults will definitely want to get in on the action, too!

πŸ₯„ The Amazing Egg Race

  1. First, decide whether you want to use raw, boiled, or plastic Easter eggs for this challenge.
  2. Next, have two competitors step up to the starting line.
  3. Balance an egg on their spoon and go!
  4. You can shake it up by adding obstacles to dodge or make it a relay race by passing from one person to another without dropping it. This game can help burn off some of the sugar that is inevitable on Easter!

πŸ₯š The Egg Toss

  1. Divide the players into 2 equal lines facing each other, with about 5 feet between the two lines.
  2. One line starts with the eggs (make them raw for more of a thrill!) and tosses them across to their partner.
  3. After a successful catch, each line takes 1 giant step backward.
  4. Keep going with the tosses! If an egg is dropped, those partners are out. See who can toss the farthest without dropping.

3. Easter Basket Decorating

Before the big hunt begins, let the little ones create their own personalized Easter baskets. You can give each kiddo a plastic basket and put out a handful of stickers and puff paint to decorate them with. Or make building the basket itself part of your Easter craft. You can use household items like recycled egg cartons or paper plates. Or, download this free template to make a cute basket out of card stock.

4. Eggshell Painting on Canvas

This Easter-themed activity is always a guaranteed hit with kids of all ages. You’ll need to plan ahead a bit, though. As you’re cooking or baking in the weeks leading up to Easter, start saving your eggshells following the instructions below.

  1. You’ll want to keep them fairly whole, so break them open using a butter knife to gently crack open the shell, creating a hole just big enough for the egg to pass through. Be sure to brush off any loose shell pieces before you pour the egg out.
  2. Rinse with hot water and anti-bacterial soap.
  3. Place back into the carton to dry.

Once you have a nice set of shells, you’re ready to fill them with paint.

  1. Fill each shell with a different color.
  2. Create a cover for each by gluing a small piece of tissue paper over the shell’s opening.
  3. After the glue dries, it’s time to paint! Set up a large canvas outside and let the kids go crazy! The shells will break against the canvas, creating a colorful and abstract painting. Each egg can usually be thrown a few times before it runs out of paint.

5. Shaving Cream Egg Coloring

Egg coloring is the most traditional Easter activity for kids and their families each year. If you’d like a different way to color eggs besides dye kits or the old “vinegar and color tablets” method, try shaving cream!

All you need is a cookie sheet, shaving cream (not gel), neon food coloring (for brighter colors), boiled eggs, and maybe some plastic gloves if you want to keep the little hands from getting messy.

  1. Fill the cookie sheet with shaving cream.
  2. Using the food coloring, drop multiple colors onto the shaving cream. You can scatter them all over or keep them in rows of coordinating colors β€” it’s up to you!
  3. Use a toothpick or butter knife to gently swirl the colors.
  4. Roll the egg through the desired color and let it sit for 10 minutes.
  5. Rinse the eggs.
  6. The result: Colorful tie-dyed eggs!
