What to Expect
Expect to have fun!! Although I am very accomplished at playing the theremin for 15+ years, I do not take myself to seriously. This is a joy to play for people, and I don't want frustrations to get in the way. Just enjoy and have a good time. But to expect to be entertained!
Need something unique for a party or event? How about the world's only musical instrument played without touching it! You have found it.
The theremin, and the
I am a singer/songwriter/performer, heart and soul. And when the spirit’s willing, and the body follows suit, we make wonderful music together!
I play the theremin; the world's first and only electronic instrument played without touching it!
I have played everywhere, from elegant tea rooms, to families of prison inmates in South Central Los Angeles. I've been on movie sound tracks, parades, and on records. I've done weddings, theater productions, would like to do a bar mitzvah, and haven't done a funeral; yet. I play at schools and churches, retirement homes, coffee houses, (please, no steamed drinks while I am performing) sat in with jazz bands, bluegrass bands, rock bands, live over the air on the KFI radio in Los Angeles, and have been played on Dr. Demento nationwide. I also played recently on ABC Television on the new Gong Show. I also am popular in the Netherlands... at least, so I’m told.
I play about 50 cover songs, using the theremin as the lead singer or lead instrument. There's nothing like hearing “Oh, Darling,” by The Beatles, but instead of Paul McCartney, it is my theremin! I also do my own recordings, in my home, and accompany myself on all the tracks, using various electronic sounds and percussions, as well as the theremin. I have self-produced 14CDs, which are purchased by fans all over the world. My music is for anyone with a sense of humor, a warm heart, and the appreciation for something a little different. I totally enjoy the creative process of making and recording music, and it shows through on both my multi-tracked recordings and when I perform live.
I am also a sound technician, so I am always conscience of good-sounding recording and performances. If you can’t hear it, what’s the point of me playing it.?
The name “Schwump” is also a name I have used to record. It goes back to the 1970's when I made a recording for a popular underground group known as The Residents, called “Aphids In The Hall.” This song was never released to the public, but 200 copies were pressed and now have become very collectable items.
By the way, I also do performances for non-profits. If you are with a non-profit and are interested in a performance, please contact me, as I do reduce my rates for such performances.
The theremin was invented in 1919 by a Russian physicist named Lev Termen (his name was later changed to Leon Theremin). Today, this marvelous instrument is once again in the musical spotlight.
Besides looking like no other instrument, the theremin is unique in that it is played without being touched. Two antennas protrude from the theremin - one controlling pitch, and the other controlling volume. As a hand approaches the vertical antenna, the pitch gets higher. Approaching the horizontal antenna makes the volume softer. Because there is no physical contact with the instrument, playing the theremin requires precise skill and perfect pitch.
Additional Booking Notes
I provide everything sound-wise. All I need is a solid electrical outlet, and room to play. The theremin needs at least three feet of space all around it, so objects don't interfere with its magnetic field. But my whole rig would fit fine on a 6' by 6' space.
