I'm a lover of words. Have been all my life. Bertha McClellan Horton gets some credit for my passion. Bertha was my "Gramommy". Every year, from sometime in the 1950's to sometime in the late1970's (almost a quarter of a century), Gramommy would travel to the National Baptist Convention to deliver numerous speeches which she had been brewing for twelve months or more. Awww! Her hand-written speeches were excellent in rhythm, prose, content, and form. She used every ounce of rhetoric available from every resource she could find. And from the conversations I overheard of the church ladies, by the time Gramommy neared the end of her speeches, it was nearly impossible to see her or hear the conclusions because of the applause and standing ovations from the audience.
While I did not get an opportunity to hear her at those conventions, I heard her practice changing words around, inserting a one-second pause here, and a three-second pause there. The speech I heard on a Monday was not often the same speech reverberating off the walls of the three-bedroom trailer two days later on Wednesday. A perfectionist at her craft of speech writing she was in her day. Her original hand-written speeches are a family artifact which we regard highly. I believe with my being that I have trained under one of the best.
Throughout school, I was often called on to read aloud in class or to stand up and give my thoughts on a topic under review. In reflection, I think my teachers (professors included) must have heard the harvest of something in my voice and delivery planted years ago under my Gramommy's informal tutelage. During my freshman year of university, I excelled in my Speech class at the University Of Northern Iowa. I went on to earn my MBA in Business Administration, still loving writing and finding opportunities to speak.
Even when I landed management jobs in corporate America, I found a way to write well-drafted Emails, manuals and procedures. My co-workers loved to sit and talk with me (we were reprimanded!) about subjects from relationships to job tasks to money to religion to politics. Maybe they loved to hear me talk too!
If you asked me what qualifies me to be an effective speechwriter, I would probably answer that in my life I have lived state-side and abroad among civilians and military personnel, and befriended many people of various ethnicities (some I still proudly call my friends); I have worked serving the poor and supporting the multi-millionaire; I have survived years of domestic abuse and escaped it; I have cried my way through a grad-school final paper because I was so tired I could not think straight (any SMH supporters out there!?); I have spoken from behind a podium on a carpeted stage of a church boasting a 5,000-membership congregation and in front of a delapidated building on the streets of Atlanta for a Homeless Ministry; I have worked the land of my grandparents almost 400-acre ranch planting beans, watermelon and other crops until I stepped in a hill of red ants (Yepper!) prompting my assignment to the "smaller" quarter acre garden plot; I have babbled with toddlers when I ran my own home-based daycare in Germany and in contrast presented financial reports - to board members approval - in several professional settings. But that's not all...(I just can't put my whole life story here)!
Now ask me how my gifts make me an awesome speechwriting candidate for your hire and I would answer:
* I am empathetic
* I am compassionate
* I am courageous
And I really love to write!
