Alma is an multi-award winning and internationally performing belly dancer, instructor, and choreographer located in the San Francisco-San Jose Bay Area. Recently she was a featured soloist at the nationally acclaimed 2016 San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival in collaboration with the Georges Lammam Ensemble featuring Susu Pampanin. This Summer, she premiered a feature full-length commissioned show in South America titled, “Una Historia de Amor”.
Alma is widely known for her natural musicality and illuminating stage presence. She draws on 15+ years of work in theater, music, and film to convey a story that leaves the public captivated. Alma also uses her studies at Stanford School of Medicine to complement teaching with an academic understanding of how the body works in order to better explain movements and prevent injury.
Of Peruvian and Algerian descent, she began dancing like many of her Egyptian belly dance inspirations - at family gatherings. Like her inspirations, Samia Gamal and Taheya Karioka, Alma finds dance to be a sources of energy and life in an otherwise chaotic world, and this is what makes Alma's shows so special. She brings that spark and life to every performance.
Her formal dance training include ballet (Western Ballet), hip-hop, and contemporary (Stanford University with Ronnie Reddick, Robert Moses, and Aleta Hayes). She has had the joy and absolutely pleasure to learn from and collaborate with many musicians and master teachers in different fields and styles of dance. She is constantly inspired by life and those around her. Alma strongly believes in the uniting force of music and dance. To her, the drums are like a heartbeat that transcends notions of any borders.
Once a medical student at Stanford University, Alma has retired from academia with a Masters in Medicine to devote her life entirely to dance. She finds that dance has been a healing source for her and others. When not dancing, Alma plays the violin, spends time in the yoga studio, and loves to learn new languages!
