Music has been part of Marshall’s life since he was very young. His father was a singer and harmonica player and his uncle played guitar, with both having participated in the WLS National Barn Dance. He started singing before he picked up an instrument and had taken lessons in accordion, trombone, and piano by the time he was 11 years old. He sang in his high school choir and took up playing guitar at 19, because it was whole lot more convenient and easier to carry around than a piano.
While living in Kentucky in the 1970s and 80s, Marshall became an avid fan of bluegrass, folk, and old-time music. Among his favorite musicians and musical influences are Sam Bush, Norman Blake, Tony Rice, John Hartford, David Bromberg, John Prine, Steve Goodman, and Doc Watson. Their music inspired him to continue to play music, as well as fostering a life-long passion for music appreciation. Further, as he developed musically, he started playing more frequently by ear, opening up more opportunities to play music with other musicians or to learn tunes from field or commercial recordings.
With his keen interest in the different textures and layers of sounds created by different instruments, over the past 15 years Marshall has been learning instruments other than the guitar. Now an avid multi-instrumentalist, he plays guitar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo, lap dulcimer, harmonica, and bouzouki. Since 2001, he has regularly attended and competed in many regional old time music competitions and has won a number of awards for his mandolin, dulcimer, and guitar playing.
Marshall frequently performs with his singer/ songwriter wife, Lucy Allen and they also perform at contra dances with the Wolf Moon String Band and Hey for Four. Lucy and Marshall have recorded two CDs of traditional and contemporary folk music: Just Passing Through (2006) and Won't See Tadpoles Covered in Fur: Songs for Children of All Ages (2012).
