What makes DJ Robby unique?
Music and Equipment... Robby is truly the master of variety. He has the unique ability to switch between genres of music quickly, from country, rock, hip hop, oldies, motown, top 40, etc., in a seamless fashion that is favorable to guests of all ages. This talent is essential for a GREAT wedding reception DJ.
Also, he mixes music in different ways. He can beatmatch AND he can play by ear. This means he isn't attached to one way of doing things and can make all ages happy.
His equipment is top-quality. The sound is clear and never played too loudly. His set up is tidy and unobtrusive. He uses digital turntables, which are housed in nice cases and stored on a small 4-foot table with a fitted black table scrim.
Some of his personal favorite artists and bands include (this doesn't mean he will play any or all of these at a wedding/ just sharing his own faves for fun): NF, Logic, Nahko Bear, Jimmy Buffet, Joe Purdy, Black Crowes, Kid Rock, Eminem, Macklemore, Zac Brown Brand, Everlast, Stevie Wonder, Justin Timberlake, Amos Lee, James Arthur, Xavier Rudd, Van Morrison, Matchbox 20, Chris Stapleton, and Otis Redding.
Service... As a DJ, Robby likes to pride himself in going above and beyond in customer service. From the moment you speak with him, it'll be obvious that he has your best interests at heart, and truly wants to make your night the best wedding reception ever! He'll check in with you often throughout the night, to ensure that the music is just what you've envisioned, and possibly offer to grab you a refill on your drink.
Working with others... Robby is recommended by tons of local vendors. Wedding coordinator friends frequently compliment him for making their job "easy". He is easy-to-get-along-with and gets the job done, without being pushy or obnoxious.
Attitude... Friends would describe Robby as outgoing, quick to laugh or offer a smile, and willing to do whatever it takes to make others happy. If you take the time to glance behind the DJ booth, you may just think he's having just as much fun as your guests are! His energy and optimism are contagious, and he'll have your guests dancing until the lights come on at the end of the night.
Other Stuff... Robby got his start DJ'ing back in high school. Before he was a professional DJ, he would bring his home stereo to parties and play for his friends. Music is in his blood, as his father and sister are both exceptional pianists, and his brother, a drummer in an up-and-coming band.
His true passion is entertainment, and he is still working to perfect his craft. He keeps up with the times and is always looking for new and cool DJ toys. It's his "outlet" at the end of the week, and he feels lucky to have a job that he enjoys. The fact that he gets paid for it is a side note.
He was a constant participant in things such as air band, talent shows, and plays.
.....In his own words...
1) What separates you from other DJ's?
I truly listen to brides and grooms. I ask them questions until I really understand what they want.
2) What do you like most about DJ'ing weddings?
It's my one time each week that I'm totally present in what I'm doing. I'm not thinking about anything else. Sounds silly, but so often we're doing 100 things at once and we're thinking about this and that or the other thing. You can't play music and be thinking about other things, because each little window is 3 minutes of time.
3) How would you describe your style?
I don't really have a style. I'm a chameleon. My style is to adapt to the bride and groom's wishes.
4) What bugs you most about other DJ's or their approach to weddings?
The lack of appreciation for what they're doing. We get paid to go out and play music and provide entertainment for people when much of the world is out doing things they hate. I think that DJ's are often ungrateful and they forget that it's a great job. There's nothing "not to like" about it. I hire DJ's for a living, and I can't believe how many of them whine about this and that. Or how many just aren't right for weddings.
5) What do you think is the difference between someone who is right for a bar and someone who is right for a wedding?
Taking it seriously enough. You have to look at all of the different things that are going on, and you really have to think about each individual piece and how it affects everything else. You're presenting yourself in a way that you're always on stage, listening to all of the needs of the bride and the expectations of the bride, etc. Weddings are big-picture thinking.
My setlist is completely dependent on the client's preferences: Must haves, Do nots, Suggestions. I read the crowd and respond. If something isn't working, I adapt. With that said, due to my vast amount of wedding experience, I know better what to play from the start. If you bring me dancers, the dance floor will be packed!
