Alright, so maybe Sadie Hawkins Day isn’t a real holiday. But just because it isn’t printed on your calendar doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate!
Sadie Hawkins Day, celebrated on the first Saturday of November, was made famous by the 1937 comic strip Li’l Abner. In the comic, Sadie Hawkins, a 35-year-old spinster, literally chases the town’s eligible bachelors (none of whom wish to marry her) in a footrace. Whoever she caught was legally required to marry her. Yikes, right?! Although the story is less than pleasant, Sadie Hawkins Day has grown over the years to be a classic American folk event.
You may recall going to a Sadie Hawkins Dance in middle school – a casual dance where the girls invite the boys. We know that times are changing and girls are more empowered than ever to ask out whoever they want. (Yes!) But, just for nostalgia’s sake, let’s get our Sadie Hawkins on!
Ladies, here are a few ways to celebrate with that special guy in your life.
1. Send him a singing telegram.
Who says that grand romantic gestures are up to the boys?! Whether you opt for a singing guitarist, a barbershop quartet, or a character like Cher or Elvis, he’s sure to be taken by surprise with a Singing Telegram! (This is especially fun if he’s easily embarrassed, but shhh… Don’t tell him we said that.)
2. Throw your own Sadie Hawkins dance.
Bring your old-school Sadie Hawkins Dance to life by recreating the event. Find a suitable venue, whether it’s your living room, a hotel ballroom, or – for an authentic feel – the local school gym! Hire a DJ or live band (we suggest swing music), hang up streamers and balloons, put out a bowl of punch (or hire a bartender – this is an adult Sadie Hawkins Dance, after all), invite your friends and voila! You’ve got yourself a blast from the past.
3. Enjoy a special meal together.
They say that the fastest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. So, instead of your typical date night at your go-to restaurant, bring the restaurant to him! Hire a Personal Chef to whip up his favorite meal at home and enjoy a nice, romantic dinner by candlelight.
4. Do what he wants to do.
Chances are, your man is interested in something that nearly bores you to tears. (That’s just how it goes.) Score major cool points by not just begrudgingly going along with his interests, but really participating. If he’s into football or basketball, wear face paint and his favorite player’s jersey and surprise him with tickets to the game. 5. Propose!
Okay, so we’re not suggesting you propose just to have something to do on Sadie Hawkins Day. But, if you wanna talk about shifting the gender dynamic, this is the most extreme way to do it! If you’re at that point in your relationship and you’re ready to get down on one knee, go ahead and pop the question. Hopefully you won’t be like Sadie and have to chase him. ;)
